Book Review - Dakota Crumb: Tiny Treasure Hunter

Dakota Crumb: Tiny Treasure Hunter

About the Book
In a clever take on the “night at the museum” theme, a little mouse with a genius for collecting leads picture book readers—and seek-and-find aficionados—on a thrilling nocturnal adventure.

Dakota Crumb: Tiny Treasure Hunter is both a rollicking story with a dash of danger and, in its final eye-popping spreads, a seek-and-find challenge. As the clock in the great museum tick-tocks past midnight, a little mouse with a sack and a treasure map scurries past the guards. Plucky and intrepid Dakota Crumb scours the museum for artifacts, including the famous Purple Jewel of Cairo (a gumdrop stashed in an exhibit). By day, the little mouse shares her carefully curated finds with fellow tiny creatures that flock to Miss Crumb’s tiny Mousehole Museum. A feast for sharp-eyed readers—who’ll delight in circling back after the story to pore over the illustrations in search of treasure—this gently suspenseful tale, splashed with soft, dusky hues, evokes a world of wonders after dark.

My Take on the Book
This was a wonderful book that introduces you to a very ingenious, but fun character. I loved Dakota Crumb from the first moment I met him and so will you. The book is filled with amazing illustrations that allow the world to come alive and you will go on adventures with Dakota Crumb as he searches the museum for strange and fun artifacts, and it will open your eyes to seeing the world around you in a whole new way. Get ready to have a blast reading this and do not be surprised if you are asked to read it again and again!

Kid Beowulf - The Tarpeian Rock

In this action-packed graphic novel, twin brothers, Beowulf and Grendel, are lost in ancient Italy and forced to fight for their freedom in the gladiatorial games. In the arena the brothers will battle fearsome warriors, deadly beasts, and meet another pair of twins, Romulus and Remus. It all leads to the founding of the world's most epic city: ROME!

Synopsis

Twin brothers, Beowulf and Grendel, are lost in ancient Italy and forced to fight for their freedom in the gladiatorial games. In the arena the brothers will discover a part of themselves neither knew existed and the fighter and the monster will emerge. Meanwhile in the Tiber River Valley among the Seven Hills, two tribes are at odds: the high-born Sabines who have made the land their own and the poor Latin farmers who are forced to till it. Compelled toward change, a young Latin girl named Tarpeia incites a revolution no one is ready for, particularly the pair chosen to lead it: twin brothers, Romulus and Remus. Action and adventure. Swords and sandals. The newest Kid Beowulf graphic novel is inspired by history, mythology, and the founding of ROME!

Inspired by the epic poem BEOWULF, Kid Beowulf is an action-adventure graphic novel series following the adventures of 12-year-old twin brothers, Beowulf and Grendel as they travel across distant lands and meet fellow epic heroes therein! The Tarpeian Rock is the fourth book in the ongoing series. The series is ideal for fans of Bone, Wings of Fire, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

My Take on the Book
I have loved the Kid Beowulf stories in the past and this story did not disappoint as the adventure and fun continue in this great new book in the series.

What I loved most was the blending of history, fantasy, and more to create a world that you will not forget and characters that really draw you into the book from every page. If you love mythology and history, you will love the story, the art, and the pace of this adventure-laden book.

The book weaves in humor, history, and more to create a memorable 4th book in the series. Even if you have not read the earlier books, you will love this book and it will encourage you to read the others too!

Book Review - All the Fish in the World

All the Fish in the World

About the Book
What makes a fish a fish?
  • Trout thinks he knows the answer. ''That's easy! Fish have fins, gills, scales, are shaped like me, and live underwater.''
  • ''Not so fast,'' answers Mudskipper. ''What about a clingfish? They don't have any scales. Or a hagfish? They don't have any fins. Or what about me? I live in and out of the water!''
  • As Trout and Mudskipper explore below and above the world's waters, they are introduced to a multitude of fish in various shapes, colors, and sizes, forcing Trout to rethink his notion of what a fish is.
  • Maybe there is a vast watery world of unimagined possibilities (like a walking fish, or a fish with a transparent head!).
  • And maybe, just maybe, there's not just one way to be a fish but many, many ways!
  • 32-page full-color picture book with dust jacket.
  • Sturdy hardcover binding.
  • Picture book measures 8-3/4'' wide x 11-1/4'' high.

My Take on the Book
This was a fun book that really taught you a ton of information in a fun way. The book walks you through understanding more about the world under the water and especially what it means to be a fish. I found that the book really lets you see the diversity that exists in the world of fish. Every page informs and entertains with great pictures and tons of information. If you have a child that loves to learn, this book will provide. In reading through the book myself, I find that on every page is something new that challenges you to learn something new.

Book Review - I Am Not Starfire

I Am Not Starfire

About the Book

Seventeen-year-old Mandy, daughter of Starfire, is NOT like her mother. Starfire is gorgeous, tall, sparkly, and a hero. Mandy is NOT a sparkly superhero. Mandy has no powers, is a kid who dyes her hair black and hates everyone but her best friend Lincoln. To Starfire, who is from another planet, Mandy seems like an alien, like some distant angry light years away moon.

And it's possible Mandy is even more distant lately, ever since she walked out on her S.A.T.s. Which, yeah, her mom doesn't know.

Everyone thinks Mandy needs to go to college and become whoever you become at college, but Mandy has other plans. Mandy's big plan is that she's going to move to France and...do whatever people do in France. But then everything changes when she gets partnered with Claire for a school project. Mandy likes Claire (even if she denies it, heartily and intensely). A lot.

How do you become the person you're supposed to be when you don't know what that is? How do you become the person you're supposed to be when the only thing you're sure of is what you're not?

When someone from Starfire's past arrives, Mandy must make a choice: give up before the battle has even begun, or step into the unknown and risk everything to save her mom. I am Not Starfire is a story about teenagers and/as aliens; about knowing where you come from and where you are going; and about mothers.

My Take on the Book
This was a great coming-of-age story that allows you to meet Starfire's daughter who is very much the anti-Starfire. That being said, you get to go along on a journey of her coming of age and trying to figure out who she was and who she wants to be. She also is trying to figure out who her mother is and how she fits into her own life, especially with how different she is from her mom. The book is great for any middle to high school reader as they will relate to what Mandy is going through and what she is trying to do to allow herself to stand apart from her mother. I appreciated this unique story and how it allows kids to be able to relate to the characters in general.

DVD Review - Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street

Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street

About the Movie
STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET takes audiences inside the minds and hearts of the “Sesame Street” creators, artists, writers, and educators who together established one of the most influential and enduring children’s programs in television history.

Inspired by the activism of the late 1960s, socially conscious television executive Joan Ganz Cooney and Sesame Workshop co-founder Lloyd Morrisett conducted a revolutionary experiment: to harness the burgeoning power of television and create an educational, impactful, uplifting and entertaining show that could reach children nationwide, especially those living in urban areas. Cooney recruited trailblazing Muppets creator Jim Henson and acclaimed children’s television writer and director Jon Stone to craft the iconic and beloved world of “Sesame Street.”

STREET GANG: HOW WE GOT TO SESAME STREET reintroduces this visionary “gang” of mission-driven artists, writers, and educators that audaciously interpreted radical changes in society and created one of most impactful television programs in history.

With more than 20 interviews with original writers, cast, and crew, and never-before-seen behind the scenes footage, STREET GANG is told from the inside with humor and emotion, weaving together personal narratives and eyewitness accounts. The film explores the original mission of the “gang” that created this cultural phenomenon, now spanning 50-plus years and reaching more than 150 countries.

My Take on the Movie
I grew up on sesame street and I continued to share this series with my own kids. This movie really allows you to get a behind-the-scenes view of the origins of Sesame Street. The documentary really gives you an appreciation for the work done by the creators to make this amazing show happen and to become a success. I loved that not only did you get to know about the people that you have heard of but also the lesser-known people behind the scenes that really made the show what it is today. If you are as much of a fan as I am of Sesame Street you will love this documentary!

Book Review - The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor

The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor

About the Book

Nimona meets Paper Girls with a literary twist in this wickedly funny graphic novel about a teenager who is swept up in a strange new universe and must save it from an all-consuming evil in order to return home.

One dark and stormy night, Haley sees a stranger drowning in the river. Since her greatest passion is Gothic romance novels, she knows her moment has come. But when Haley leaps into the water to rescue the stranger, she awakens in Willowweep. It certainly looks like the setting of one of her favorite books: A stately manor. A sinister housekeeper. Three brooding brothers. There’s even a ghost.

Except Willowweep is not what it seems. Its romantic exterior hides the workings of a pocket universe—the only protection our world has against a great force of penultimate evil, and its defenses are crumbling. Could cruel fate make Haley the heroine that Willowweep needs?

My Take on the Book
Christopher Baldwin is a great author and thus, I have been excited to see this hit the market. That being said one of the things I loved about this is the story. The book has a great story with great characters that you really get to know. This is the type of book that definitely has some aspects of horror that is still appropriate to middle-school readers. The book itself was a ton of fun and something that really was an engaging read. I know that my daughter and I read this together, and we did not want to put it down!

Book Review - High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: The Road Trip

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: The Road Trip

About the Book
Join everyone's favorite Wildcats from the Disney+ smash hit original series High school Musical: The Musical: The Series in this novel by New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

On the heels of their wildly successful run of High School Musical, the gang learns of a can't-miss opportunity, a High School Musical convention in the next state. There's something for everyone: panels about mounting your next hit show, cafeteria-tray-dance workshops, Wildcat cosplay, and even a special appearance from the pooch who played Sharpay's dog (well, one of her puppies, that is).

Ready to hit the road, the crew immediately begins making plans. Nini can't wait to use the weekend to show how much she cares for Ricky (especially since they just got back together). Kourtney debates signing up for a singing workshop (especially if she's maybe, just maybe, considering auditioning for the next show), and Gina and Ashlyn decide it'll be the perfect trial run for living together (especially because Gina has never actually had a friendship last this long). Carlos can't wait to help Miss Jenn prep for the spring musical, even if Seb has to stay behind to help with the family farm. But car breakdowns, late starts, and a lost E.J. throw a wrench in their plans.

Will the East Highers get the weekend getaway of their dreams? Or will the bumps on the road get the better of them?

My Take on the Book
This was a fun book that allows you to really get to know the characters. It is through this connection to the characters that you feel a part of the story, which makes reading the book even more fun. The book also has a great mix of drama and humor which flows through the entire book.

The book itself compliments the show that many have watched and really is the time between season one and two.

If you are a fan of the series you will be happy to see that Nini and Ricky are back together and there are some teases to BIG information that Nini wants to share. Outside of this though you get to follow all of the other characters as their lives continue and each story is engaging and fun, and while plans are set they do not always go as planned.

The book is written in a way that draws you in from beginning to end. If you are a fan of this show and its' characters, you should definitely read this book!

Book Review - The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher: A Johnny Constantine Graphic Novel

The Mystery of the Meanest Teacher: A Johnny Constantine Graphic Novel

About the Book
THE MYSTERY OF THE MEANEST TEACHER: A JOHNNY CONSTANTINE GRAPHIC NOVEL is a comedic middle grade graphic novel about two kids with developing magical powers trying to figure out if their schoolteacher is really, secretly, a witch.

After angering a number of hostile spirits in England, 13-year-old magician Johnny Constantine has to find a way out of the country. Persuading his parents to send him to America, John arrives at the Junior Success Boarding School in Salem, Massachusetts. But once there,he finds himself to be something of an outcast. And he is also convinced that his homeroom teacher really has it in for him. Worse, he's convinced that's she's really a witch.

Fortunately, John is able to find one kindred spirit at school with whom he's able to form an alliance--another misfit named Anna, who also happens to have her own developing magical powers. John recruits Anna in his efforts to uncover the truth about Ms. Kayla and expose the Meanest Teacher's real identity to the world.

Joined by a friendly demon named Etrigan, these two amateur sleuths will uncover clues and stumble upon forces beyond their control in a humorous series of misadventures.

My Take on the Book
My 13-year-old daughter loves graphic novels and comics. She did not know what to expect in this book because she knew that John Constantine could be a very dark character, but as she read it she found that it was a great re-imagining of his character from a kids' point of view. As I read the book I loved seeing Constantine, not as the dark character that I knew him as but instead in a whole new light. The book has a great mystery within its' pages and in reading this, anyone that loves comics, graphic novels, and mysteries will really enjoy this!

Book Review - Positively Energizing Leadership: Virtuous Actions and Relationships That Create High Performance

Positively Energizing Leadership: Virtuous Actions and Relationships That Create High Performance

About the Book

This practical guide, the first to show how leaders can achieve extraordinary results through the positive energy generated by virtuous interactions with employees, is written by one of the giants in the study of positive leadership.

This book reveals one of the most important but frequently ignored factors that lead to spectacular performance in organizations. Kim Cameron, a true pioneer in the study of positive leadership, offers validated scientific evidence that all individuals are inherently attracted to and flourish in the presence of positive energy, a principle known in biology as heliotropism. Further, he shows that the positive relational energy generated by leaders' virtuous behaviors—such as generosity, compassion, gratitude, trustworthiness, forgiveness, and kindness—is tightly linked to extraordinary organizational outcomes like greater innovation, higher profits, and increased engagement and retention.

Cameron has not written a feel-good tome about the power of positive thinking, “happiology,” or unbridled optimism. This research-based explanation shows how to achieve performance that exceeds expectations. He provides practical suggestions, assessments, and exercises showing how leaders can improve their own positive energy and increase positive relational energy in their organizations. Positively Energizing Leadership is a major contribution to the theory and practice of leadership.

My Take on the Book
I have always strived to be a source of positive energy in the workplaces I am in. I try to build people up, listen, and create high-performing teams for the future. Thus, in saying this, I am always looking for books that will help me to even perform at a higher level to be an even stronger leader. This book really helps you to see the importance of positivity. It reaffirmed the importance of having positive energy in the workplace and talks about the great benefits this energy can have to productivity as well as overall happiness.

The book uses great examples and really challenges you to take the ideas that he is presenting and putting them to work immediately. The examples that are in the book are ones that anyone can do without feeling embarrassed or feeling like you are making a fool of yourself. They made sense, and while I had tried some of the ideas before, others were new and ones that I tried myself and the results were very positive!

The book is a very quick read, and you may even find you might want to read it again!

Book Review - The Scholarship Offer System: How to go from not recruited to on coaches radars and more exposure in 30 days or less

The Scholarship Offer System: How to go from not recruited to on coaches radars and more exposure in 30 days or less

About the Book
The Scholarship Offer System is a detailed step-by-step guide that breaks down everything one needs to know to ultimately be awarded an athletic scholarship. What sets this guide apart from all the others out there is that it has been proven to produce results in as little as 30 days and sometimes less.

This guide was written for athletes (and their parents) who know they have what it takes to play at the next level, but they may not be getting a fair shake at their school, or the athlete who isn't showing up on recruiting boards due to lack of exposure, and the athlete who may be getting interest from some schools but not the schools that they would like to attend.

This book helps combat all of those scenarios and gets the athlete and their parents on the right track in the recruiting process.

What's covered in the book:
  • The importance of SAT/ACT exams
  • Financial Aid and how it plays into recruiting
  • How to get on the radars of schools that you choose FAST
  • How to keep coaches interested throughout the recruiting process
  • Templates and examples that are proven to work

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that really allows you to explore the whole concept of getting recruited to play sports in college. The author has done a great job at providing parents and students a roadmap to see what recruiters are looking for. The book also helps you to lay out a gameplan for how to change up what you are doing to allow your student to stand out in a whole new way!
