About the Book
Jim Fusilli’s new novel takes place in the years surrounding World War II in the dangerous immigrant neighborhood of Narrows Gate, overlooking the Hudson River, where anything can happen—and it usually does. Sal Benno is a neighborhood kid who doesn’t take to school but is able to provide the favors the Mafia needs, a skill that brings him into their inner circle and closer to ultimate danger. His lifelong friend Leo Bell sticks by Sal through thick and thin, but harbors a dangerous secret that could either keep Sal alive—or bring his life to an abrupt end. In the middle of it is Billy “Bebe” Marsala, a hugely popular and handsome crooner who becomes a pawn in a mob war that could destroy them all. A novel that rekindles the spirit of such groundbreaking works as Mario Puzo’s The Godfather and Budd Schulberg’s On the Waterfront, Narrows Gate is a powerful, epic saga that captures the heart of the immigrant experience—and the soul of America.
As the long-time rock and pop critic for The Wall Street Journal, Fusilli employs his knowledge of, and passion for, the music of the era to give NARROWS GATE its “soundtrack.” Though this is his sixth novel, it is the first to prominently feature music. Among the musicians who appear in the novel are Count Basie, Bing Crosby, Roy Eldridge, Lester Young and, most notably, Billie Holiday. And the character of Bebe Marsala, a talented, brazen and deeply flawed crooner, is based on the legend of Frank Sinatra, Hoboken’s most famous native. In addition to Bebe, many other characters were inspired by real legends, such as Ava Gardner, Artie Shaw, Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello, Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel, to name a few.
My Take on the Book
What I think sets this book apart from others is the author's use of real life personas within his book. You are transported into another time where Mobs reign supreme and immigrants are everywhere. For many you will seem many parallels within this book to the 1930's and 1940's in the United States. This book was a engaging read and I found that once I started the book I could not set the book back down. The action was intense and you truly do get drawn into the overall story and the action of the book itself. While the book is a bit long, you will not even notice it as you delve into the imagery and plot that flows off every page!

Book Review - Scholastic Reader Level 2: Hibernation
About the Book
Learn all about these animals and where they go during winter!
During the cold winter months, some animals go into a deep sleep called hibernation. You'd be surprised to learn about all of the other animals that hibernate besides bears, like squirrels, skunks, chipmunks and bats. Children will learn how an animal prepares for hibernation by stuffing itself with food so that it can survive in its dormant months and how animals prepare "safe spots," like dens and burrows, so that they will be protected from predators as they sleep.
My Take on the Book
Scholastic books has published another excellent nonfiction book for young readers. All children love animals and are curious about them. This specific book about animal hibernation will fascinate you and your child.
Each set of pages includes a beautiful photograph of the warm or cold blooded animal that hibernates. The text explains what kind of hibernation the animal prepares for and how it prepares. I found this especially interesting as I did not know there were so many different forms of hibernation.
I see this book as a resource for a classroom and family library. I know you will enjoy this book along with your child. It may be a good springboard to locating other animals besides the ones in the book that hibernate.

Book Review - Scholastic Reader Level 2: Solar System
About the Book
This revised Scholastic Science Reader features a brand-new cover, photographs, and interior design!
In SOLAR SYSTEM, young readers will get a simple explanation of the Sun, the eight planets, and their moons with additional information about other parts of the solar system. Among other facts, they willl find out how far each planet is from the sun and what it looks like up close!
My Take on the Book
If your child enjoys science and loves to learn about the solar system, this book will be a good nonfiction addition to your library.
The detailed photographs of the sun, moon, and eight planets are on separate pages with accompanying text. The text highlights new vocabulary and defines it within the sentence in a clear and concise manner. Each page has information about the planets of the solar system: the size, rotation, distance from the sun, orbit length, number of moons, and number of rings. The back of the book has a complete glossary of the terms used.
Our children need to read nonfiction as well as fiction. This small book is packed with information and would be a good starter book explaining our solar system at an elementary level.

Book Review - There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover!
About the Book
There was an Old Lady who swallowed things over and over, and now she's come back to swallow a clover!
She's back! That lovely old lady has returned just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Now she's swallowing items to make the perfect rainbow to hide a pot of gold.
My Take on the Book
There are several different versions of "There was an old lady that swallowed . . .". This particular version begins with our little old lady swallowing a clover and ends up with her dancing with a leprechaun on St. Patrick's Day. Of course there is a pot of gold and a rainbow within the story. It is simply a silly and enchanting story that children will enjoy . It includes rhyme and rhythm. The illustrations show such detailed animation of the facial expressions not only of the little old lady, but also the various creatures she swallows. You can almost feel their anxiety as they end up being swallowed but then their elation at the end of the book.
Laugh along with your child as you read this delightful story.

There was an Old Lady who swallowed things over and over, and now she's come back to swallow a clover!
She's back! That lovely old lady has returned just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Now she's swallowing items to make the perfect rainbow to hide a pot of gold.

Book Review - Scooby-Doo Reader #31: Werewolf Watch
About the Book
Scooby-Doo is probably the world's best-known and most loved cartoon pooch. Scholastic's books are the #2 Scooby licensed product in the world!
Scooby and the gang are helping out at an animal shelter. The kids can't wait to get to know all the cute and cuddly animals. But could one of the dogs be (gulp) a werewolf? Jinkies! It's up to Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne to unmask that creepy canine!
My Take on the Book
Your level 2 reader (grades 1-2) will enjoy this new Scooby-Doo story. Once again Scooby-Doo and his friends have a mystery to solve. They use their problem solving skills to catch the Werewolf who turns out to be an employee of the pet shop.
If your child enjoys Scooby-Doo , this book would be a good addition to his or her library. It is full of the fun and the mischief that Scooby-Doo and Shaggy usually get themselves into within each adventure.

Book Review - Clifford Loves His Friends Sticker Storybook
About the Book
Bringing Clifford to our established Sticker Storybook line!
With a gentle Valentine's Day hook, this Sticker Storybook shows just how much Clifford loves his friends, human and canine alike. Clifford knows that kindness sticks--and everyone is stuck on Clifford!
About the Author
Norman Bridwell is the author and illustrator of numerous children's books, including the beloved Clifford series, which has over 126 million copies in print, in 13 languages! He lives in Edgartown, MA with his wife Norma. They have two children, son, Tim, and daughter, Emily Elizabeth.
My Take on the Book
This was a great book with a great story that added to the wonderful array of stories that are now out there with regards to the big red dog that we all know and love. What is even better though with this book is that there are stickers that can be used within the book to allow the reader to have some interactive fun while they are reading. With over 60 stickers readers will stay busy for some time. The only thing I wished was that the stickers were reusable and can be used a cling-ons instead of stickers, but alas, that is only my concern.Overall, this was a great book!

Book Review - Horsekeeping
About the Book
Why would successful urbanites, used to clean, controlled and orderly lives, take on the task of restoring a near collapsing empty barn littered with haphazard and decayed fencing, pastures deep in standing water, and try to turn it into a thriving horse farm?
Initially motivated only by a city dweller’s fantasy and obscure memories of childhood visits to the country, Roxanne Bok oversees the reconstruction of a thirty-seven stall barn and painstakingly discovers something about both large animals and running a small business.
Follow an equine novice as she leads her equally naïve family in an eighteenmonth long adventure of breathing life back into a once great horse farm in rural New England. A thoughtfully detailed memoir, Roxanne Bok learns it all the hard way, from the agony of repeatedly being tossed off a beloved horse, to the thrill of winning a blue ribbon.
For those who love horses, the dream of country life or simply the sight of an otherwise urban family on great rural adventure, here is a tale that plumbs the full range of human emotions but ends with a deepened love of the land and the extraordinary equine creatures that inhabit it.
Proceeds from book sales will be donated to support horse rescue charities.
My Take on the Book
This book transports you into the life on a farm and into the relationships of the family members and those around the family. The book was well written and as you read you are presented with vivid imagery of New England and what once was a great horse farm, which is now being transformed. I also loved the fact that the book takes people out of their element and transforms their lives and themselves into better people through the challenges that they must endure. This book was eye-opening and leaves you with a warm feeling in your heart as you read and sometimes even re-read passages to get the full effect of the experiences being shared.

Book Review - White Truffles in Winter
About the Book
White Truffles in Winter imagines the world of the remarkable French chef Auguste Escoffier (1846-1935), who changed how we eat through his legendary restaurants at the Savoy and the Ritz. A man of contradictions—kind yet imperious, food-obsessed yet rarely hungry—Escoffier was also torn between two women: the famous, beautiful, and reckless actress Sarah Bernhardt and his wife, the independent and sublime poet Delphine Daffis, who refused to ever leave Monte Carlo. In the last year of Escoffier's life, in the middle of writing his memoirs, he has returned to Delphine, who requests a dish in her name as he has honored Bernhardt, Queen Victoria, and so many others. How does one define the complexity of love on a single plate? N. M. Kelby brings us the sensuality of food and love amid a world on the verge of war in this work that shimmers with beauty and longing.
About the Author
N. M. Kelby is the critically acclaimed author of In the Company of Angels, Whale Season, and the Florida Book Award winner A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts, among others. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
My Take on the Book
In this book you are transported into a world that is so real and seeing that three of the main characters were, you have to sometimes remind yourself that this is in fact a book that is a work of fiction. In reading this book I was happy to find that the author did a remarkable job at capturing the era in which she was writing. She took bit of real life and embellished it into a world and a story in which you can't help to keep reading.
After reading this book I decided to do a bit more in depth research myself on the French chef Auguste Escoffier and was surprised to see some names of food dishes that he invented that are still around today.
All-in-all this was a great book that I would highly recommend for a book that will truly transport you and allow you to forget yourself for a while!

Book Review - The Many Adventures of Pengey Penguin
About the Book
The Many Adventures of Pengey the Penguin, the beloved children’s storybook about the tiny and endearing penguin, Pengey, will be joining the ranks of other e-reader stories with the charming cast of characters and twists in Pengey’s quest to find home.
The Many Adventures of Pengey the Penguin (San Francisco Story Works, Dec 2011), winner of the Family Choice Awards and USA Best Books Finalist, is a “bedtime story for the soul,” with a character that is wholesome and reminiscent of our favorite heroes. To read Pengey’s story is to feel empathetic and engaged in this brave little penguin’s harrowing adventures to return back to his first true friend, Wendy.
Soon after Pengey hatched, he found himself orphaned, alone and terribly hungry. The other penguins in Antarctica shunned the small Pengey, and one night after a terrible storm, he finds himself alone on an iceberg nearing a terrible demise. Luckily, the iceberg travels near some humans, and although Pengey is very weak, he studies the human’s words and mannerisms. Pengey proves to be an intelligent penguin with a special gift-- the ability to speak simple human words, yet with the most profound delivery.
The Many Adventures of Pengey the Penguin is a story of neglect and hope, of friendship and courage, proving that home is truly wherever you are loved.
Children and adults have long had a fascination with penguins. The charming flightless birds that have glided into our hearts, with films like Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two (opening this November), can be cherished even more with The Many Adventures of Pengey the Penguin. Being the polite penguin that he is, Pengey doesn’t mean to steal your heart, but he probably will!
About the Author
John Burns lives in San Francisco with his wife, Carol. The author is the winner of the 2001 Best Screenplay awarded by Arizona Women in Film, 2006 winner of the Family Choice Awards, USA Best Books Finalist, a 2008 Finalist in USA Best Books and The Next Generation Indie Book Awards in Children's Fiction.
My Take on the Book
This was a fun book for people of all ages. I loved the crazy adventures that Pengey gets himself into. I also love how the author has developed a penguin that is so likable and one that anyone can relate to. The book shares many messages, but overall, I love the message of determination and perseverance that one sees in the book from start to finish. I also like Pengey's open honesty as it is fresh and it it allows for the reader to see how this is a positive trait to have in one's own life. This book is definitely one that I would highly recommend to all!

Book Review - Man Shoes
About the Book
Man Shoes is a must read book for men of all ages, and for the women who love them. The book chronicles the inspiring true story of one man's journey through loss and love, told with humor and heroism. It is a stunning revelation of one man’s determination to embrace life to its fullest, Man Shoes demonstrates that new beginnings are possible at any age and at any stage of life, no matter what obstacles get in the way.
Tom Watson, Founder and President of Your Better Life, has spent his life enriching and inspiring people to touch the stars in their own careers and personal lives. By focusing on and caring for each individual in his business and personal life, Tom inspires people to reach out and help others while reaching up to achieve their own goals. Backed by a Masters Degree plus 25 years as a customer service specialist and leader in the recreation industry, Tom is a highly successful business owner, consultant and sought after international speaker. His keynote speeches blend business acumen with engaging life stories and a unique sense of humour that inspire and motivate people to realize their best in their own lives.
My Take on the Book
This was a great story that was so inspirational. As a reader you are brought into the story and able to see how one man has taken the pieces of his life and made himself a better person overall. On top of this though the book make you re-examine your own life and think about how you too can go through a similar transformation.
What I loved about the book was how the author allows you to truly feel the passion and love that he had for the people that entered his life. For me, I can only hope that I can be half the man that Tom has become and show that much love too.
The book is set up to help you on your own journey giving you suggestions in each chapter which allow you to examine your own life and do what you need to be able to move yourself forward.
No matter if you are a man or a woman, this book is one that I would highly recommend!

Book Review - The World's Oldest Joke Book: Hundreds of Hilariously Terrible Ancient Jokes
About the Book
Sailor: Where’s the wind coming from today?
Captain: Onions and cabbages.
Apparently farting has been funny for a very long time. Well, at least since the fourth century when Philogelos was written by the ancient Greeks.
In the recently released, The World’s Oldest Joke Book readers will find hundreds of filthy ancient quips translated from what historians believe is the oldest joke book in the world.
From absurd situations, to farting and foolishness, The World’s Oldest Joke Book contains a wealth of jokes, some of which still hit the mark and some that will have you groaning with laughter (even if it is because they’re so bad, they’re good). Among these ancient gems you will find:
An idiot hears that a crow can live for up to 200 years,
So he buys one to see if it’s true.
An Abderite meets a eunuch who’s chatting with a woman, and asks him if this is his wife. When he’s told the eunuchs can’t have wives, the Abderite says, “My mistake-it must be your daughter.”
With over 200 wisecracks and absurd one-liners, The World’s Oldest Joke Book will prove beyond doubt that when it comes to witty repartee, humankind will never be able to top “Yeah? Well, you smell.”
A great gift for the guy who’s always telling bad jokes (who knows maybe that guy is you!)
My Take on the Book
If you love jokes, then this book is for you. With jokes that go back many many years. I found many to be funny, especially as I know a little history. Some of the jokes may be over the heads of some that are a bit behind in their history lessons though. All-in-all though this is a great book that brings together some very well researched books that are both pithy and funny and also make you think too so that you can grasp the whole concept of the joke being told.

Winter Driving Tips from General Motors
As it will soon be time to make the drive “over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house,” now is a great time to make sure that you – and your car – and well prepared for winter driving.
While winter driving can be stressful for motorists, from navigating the knee-deep snow and steering clear of accidents on the roadways, it’s also a stressful time for your car. Imagine having to wake up from a frozen sleep with the turn of a key and set off trudging through the ice, snow and slush of winter driving moments later.
To make sure your winter driving is as smooth as possible for you and your car, GM Consumer Advocate James Bell has prepared some tips to get you ready for that drive to and you’re your grandmother’s house this holiday season.
Five tips to prepare your carfor winter driving:
1. TIRES: Be sure your tires are ready for winter driving and have sufficient tread depth. All tires have a weather rating specifying the weather conditions the tire is designed to perform best in. Depending on where you live and the winter climate, you may need to update your tires to the correct specification for your driving needs. This may mean a M+S (mud+snow) rating would give you the best performance in inclement weather.
Some areas with a lot of snow and ice may require studded tires or snow chains to travel in higher elevations during the winter months.
Also, be sure there is sufficient tire pressure as air pressure can drop by 15 percent in the cold weather.
2. FLUIDS: Be sure the various fluids and oils in your car are the right specification and level for winter driving. This includes your engine oil, which may require a lower viscosity rating for colder temperatures, and your engine coolant (anti-freeze) is suitable for cold weather. Improper or old coolant may not adequately protect your engine from the freezing temperatures.
Make sure you have all-season windshield washer fluid and your reservoir is full.
Preparing for winter is also a great time to have a dealer mechanic check your car over to make sure that not only your fluids and oils are up to spec for the winter, but to also check other fluids, such as your car’s brake and transmission fluids to make sure they are in good condition and properly filled.
One last note about fluids: Keep your gas tank at least one-half full. As moisture can accumulate in your vehicle’s gas tank, maintaining a full to half-full tank of gasoline can prevent fuel line freeze-up. That may keep your car from starting in the cold weather and result in a call to the local towing company to get your car into the service center.
3. BATTERY: If there is one system on your car working overtime in the winter, it’s your car’s battery and electrical system. Did you know it can take as much as five-times the cranking energy to start a cold engine in freezing temperatures versus an engine in the summer?
That’s why it’s important to have your battery checked by a mechanic to determine its condition and if it needs to be replaced before winter. Just like the old saying, paying a little now can save you a lot later if you have to have your car towed or need to have additional items repaired due to the lack of proper electrical current available from a weakened battery.
If you are driving one of the new electric or range-extended electric vehicles, be sure to keep a charging system with you at all times and plug-in whenever possible to keep your traction batteries changed and the batteries warm. Just like your starter battery, traction batteries can lose their charge capacity in the colder temperatures.
4. WINDSHIELD WIPERS and FLOORMATS: Among the hazards of driving in winter weather, is the potential loss of visibility due to snow and ice accumulating on your windshield. Making matters worse, it’s often difficult to tell if your windshield wipers are worn out until you need them – like during a snowstorm!
A simple rule of thumb is to replace your car’s windshield wipers in the spring and in the fall. If you have a rear wiper, it’s best to replace it too, along with the front wiper blades.
Many top brands now make winter-specific windshield wiper replacements that have a solid rubber coating to prevent the blades from freezing and more able to conform to the curve of the windshield to provide a more thorough cleaning of the glass surface.
While you’re picking up some new wiper blades, why not checkout some all-season floor mats. While many cars now offer carpeted mats as standard equipment, a rough winter can really take their toll. All-season mats, made of durable rubber, can be easily removed and cleaned with a garden hose and scrub brush. And if you’re stuck, they can be used to provide you some extra traction.
5. VEHICLE INSPECTION: While most people might not think of taking the time to have a professional give your vehicle a winter inspection, having your dealer service center or trusted mechanic perform a pre-winter inspection is more than just a good idea, it could save you money and headaches in the long run.
Items, such as a cracked windshield or scratch in your car’s paint, could worsen dramatically due to the fluctuations in temperature. What might be a small blemish in the fall could turn into a significant issue by spring. Therefore, it may pay to have those items identified and repaired before winter.
Now is also a good time to check your vehicle’s exterior and interior lamps. This includes headlamps, side marker lamps and turn signals, and the rear tail lamps and brake lights. When the weather is bad, it’s best to see clearly and to be seen!
Five tips to prepare youfor winter driving:
1. BE PREPARED: Like the old scout motto, be prepared for anything winter can dish out to you, including being stranded or stuck in the snow. That means take along an extra pair of gloves and boots, and other items, such as a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, a portable shovel, and ice melt are all good things to store in your car’s trunk for the winter.
Should you get stuck you will have the tools you need to hopefully dig yourself out and keep yourself warm. It’s also good idea to have a package of hand warmers and some snack food in the glove compartment in case you get stuck in the snow and are outside for a prolonged period of time.
Be sure to have a cell phone and charger in case you need to call for help.
2. HAVE A LIFELINE: It’s a good idea to have a lifeline to you and your car in case of an emergency. Systems such as OnStar can connect you to 24-7 trained emergency personnel who can help you in case of an emergency. These systems use dedicated cellular connections and can activate automatically after an accident. They can also pinpoint your exact location if you are lost or cannot be seen from the road, as in the case of sliding into a ditch or in whiteout conditions.
OnStar now offers the FMV mirror, which can be installed in virtually any vehicle, and offers most of the features of the full OnStar system, including accident alert and 24-7 emergency response.
3. WINTER TOOLS – A GOOD ICE SCRAPER:It’s essential to keep the proper winter tools to keep your car ready for driving in the winter weather. A good snowbrush and ice scraper is a must-have for clearing snow and ice from your vehicle. Be sure to clear all of your windows of ice and snow before driving, and remember to clear away ice and snow from your headlamps, turn signals, brake lights – including the high center-mounted brake light – and your license plates. Also, be sure to stow ice scrapers in a safe place while to make sure it doesn’t get in the way while driving or injure someone in an accident.
4. KNOW YOUR CAR’S SAFETY FEATURES:All cars sold today – and many cars on the road – now have various forms of traction and braking control systems. It is essential to know which of these systems are installed on your vehicle and to know how to use them properly.
Anti-lock brakes – are designed to prevent your wheels from skidding on dry, wet or icy surfaces. For vehicles without an anti-lock braking system, the best way to control a vehicle sliding on icy surfaces is to pump the brakes to safely bring the vehicle to a stop. For cars with anti-lock brakes, the system does that for you, so apply a constant firm pressure on the brake pedal and the system automatically applies the correct brake pressure to bring the car to a stop without locking up the wheels.
Traction Control – is a system that works opposite to anti-lock brakes. Instead of gradually easing your car to a stop, traction control gradually applies power to the drive wheels in a way that prevents wheel spin. The proper way to drive with traction control is to go ahead and drive as you normally would, with the exception that no matter how much you press the accelerator, the car will moderate acceleration to move the car without spinning the wheels.
Note that traction control systems are switched on by default. That means the system is automatically engaged when you start your car but can be turned off in certain situations, such as if you’re stuck in snow and needed to rock your vehicle to get out. In those cases, turn the “TC” switch to off until you have safely dislodged your vehicle. Turn the system back on before you continuing driving.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) – are systems, such as GM’s StabiliTrack, which merge technologies such as anti-lock braking and traction control, to provide additional safety when driving in inclement weather. The systems are beneficial while driving and can sense when a car is beginning to lose control. ESC will simultaneously divert power and apply braking to affected wheels to regain proper vehicle direction and stability. Again, ESC is on by default, and while it may be switched off in certain conditions, it should be activated when driving in inclement conditions.
5. STAY ALERT – while coffee and cider might be good to keep drivers feeling fresh and alert while driving home from grandmother’s house, it’s also a good idea to know your vehicle’s emergency alert, weather and navigation systems. This is especially true if you are going on an extend drive along unfamiliar roads.
If your car has a navigation system, be sure to familiarize yourself with how it works, if it has an emergency weather or traffic alert system, be sure you know how to activate it and access it when it provides alerts.
For cars that do not have these advanced navigation or emergency radio systems installed, check ahead for local traffic alert frequencies to tune into on your car’s AM band. Either way, the traffic and weather alerts can be a lifesaver, warning drivers of whiteout and black ice conditions, and to help avoid potentially very dangerous driving conditions.
With that, plan your route, and let others know where you will be traveling and when you’ll arrive.

Get Sauced for the Holidays – and Earn $1 Million Dollars
Does your family tussle over who’s got the best spinach-artichoke dip during holiday get-togethers? Can good times turn into a shouting match over whether Mom’s secret ingredient kicks Grandma’s salsa to the curb?
That competitive spirit and the creativity and pride that go with it are just what Dave’s Gourmet (www.davesgourmet.com) is looking for. The company that produces award-winning salsas, sauces, dips and spreads sold around the globe is looking for a few game contenders to spice up its product line.
“I don’t care if you’re a college kid working on a dorm hot plate or a professional fresh from the ‘Iron Chef’ set,” says owner Dave Hirschkop. “If you’ve got a killer original recipe, you can earn up to $1 million in sales royalties in Dave’s Gourmet Recipe Challenge.”
That, by the way, starts with a $2,000 advance right off the bat.
“I’m so serious about finding a great new recipe, we’ll not only accept sauces, dips, salsas, or spreads – from barbecue to tapenade, but if you have something incredible that doesn’t quite meet the definition, drop us a note and we might consider it.”
To enter Dave’s Gourmet Recipe Challenge, submit your original recipe by Dec. 31 at www.davesgourmet.com. You have to have turned 18 by Oct. 15, 2011 and you must be a legal U.S. resident at the time of the finals.
Here’s how it works:
About Dave Hirschkop
Dave Hirschkop graduated from Boston University back in the 1980s and opened a mom-and-pop restaurant called Burrito Madness. It was there he began experimenting with hot sauces and later moved into pasta sauces. He started Dave’s Gourmet 18 years ago, and has products in major retailers including Safeway, Williams-Sonoma, Whole Foods and Costco.

- Sauces will be judged in five categories: taste, appearance, creativity, consumer appeal and the recipe’s ability to be mass-produced. (If Dave has to hand-cut bay leaves from trees found only on the southernmost tip of Italy in order to make your sauce, it might be hard to mass-produce.)
- The semifinalists will be taste-tested by a panel from Dave’s Gourmet and finalists will be chosen and their owners notified Jan. 12-14.
- Jan. 15 to 17, hundreds of food professionals attending the Fancy Foods Show in San Francisco will sample the finalists and vote for their favorites.
- On Jan. 18, the winner or winners will be announced and notified.
- Within two weeks of being notified, winners must sign some paperwork and collect their advance of $2,000.
- The sauce will be produced for Dave’s Gourmet’s retailers and may have the winner’s name on the label.
- The winner will receive royalties for six years, up to $1 million.

Game Review - NASCAR Unleashed for Nintendo 3DS
Overview
Racers will break free from the ovals as they explode onto the pavements, beaches and off-road areas of some of the most beloved NASCAR® sanctioned race tracks. The thrill in re-discovering familiar tracks with a new twist gives NASCAR Unleashed™ a completely unchained stock car experience. See the sights, feel the salty ocean breeze and blast past the lofty skyscrapers; it’s a whole new world of NASCAR racing! Players will fight their way to be the best as NASCAR Unleashed brings the fun and excitement off the track and into your house as this arcade racer makes it way to the Xbox 360®, PlayStation®3, Wii™ and Nintendo 3DS™.
Key Features
- All-Star Pack: Fifteen of NASCAR’s biggest drivers make their appearance in the game! Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and many more!
- Racetrack Déjà Vu: Players will race on real life NASCAR sanctioned race tracks with a bit of a twist. Players will make their way across familiar parts of the track and burst into brand new areas they wouldn’t expect! Tracks include: Daytona International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.
- Bumper to Bumper: Bumping and grinding is the name of the game as players will have to fight their way up to pole position. Opponents won’t make it easy though as they’ll be every bit as ruthless as you on their quest to be the best!
- Race to Victory: The key to winning is the mastery of important NASCAR techniques like drafting and sling-shotting past the opposition. Players are awarded for skillful driving with a “boost” power-up that allows them to pull in front of the competition and go for the checkered flag.
- Arcade Action: Racing is wild, fast and crazy as players drift around corners and hit massive jumps while trying to avoid being wrecked.
- Unlockables Unleashed: After winning events, players will be rewarded with fun and goofy upgrades that can be used to customize their cars into something unique and outrageous.
My Take on the Games
I was lucky enough to be able to try out both the Nintendo 3DS versions of this game and I have to say that I was so impressed. The game itself transports you into the world of NASCAR and you are able to get into the driver seat and take off. The graphics in the game are great and with the fact that they have incorporated some of the best NASCAR drivers into the game itself, if you are a true fan, you will be mesmerized. The game provides hours of fun for the whole family and just realize that if you let others play this you might not get it back in the end as it is addictive and so much fun to play!
