Book Review - Earning My Spots

Earning My Spots

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Sam and his family are the only werehyenas in their town, and they do their best to keep up their cover in front of the humans while the other more aggressive shifters mock the werehyena family for being weak and passive. But Sam sees no other life for himself, as he believes what he is told: he is inferior to the other shifters.

One night, a pack of shifters raids Sam’s house and takes his family, leaving him all alone. With the help of some new friends, Sam sets off on a journey from Vermont to South America to rescue his family. Along the way, he meets various shifters who aid him on his quest. He even meets a tribe of werehyenas in Louisiana who teach him how powerful his kind actually is and how far his ancestry goes back. From them, Sam learns he has a great destiny to fulfill.

As Sam draws closer to finding his family, he begins to understand how different the world of shifters is that exists outside of his small hometown. Shifters are tired of humans destroying their homes, and they want not only revenge but also to force humans into submission. It becomes clear that Sam is the only one who can stop a war that’s on the brink of erupting.

Fans of the Spirit Animals and Warriors series will enjoy accompanying Sam on his quest as he discovers not only that his destiny and inner strength are greater than he thought, but also that being a werehyena is not as laughable as he assumed.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that brings out some great characters and really allows you to explore a world different than our own in ways that bring forth cultural nuances and more. The book keeps you guessing and there are some inherent messages that are shared that I was not aware would be present at first but they were great to see and can educate and make people think as well as provide entertainment too. This was a great book that you will love!

Book Review - Online or Flatline: The Small Business Owner's Guide to Digital Marketing

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Digital marketing is a daunting task for many small business owners. It often seems intimidating and complicated, and the benefits are not easily measured, but without it, many businesses die out. In Online or Flatline, Nick Choat offers compelling reasons to get your business online and easy-to-use tools to make it possible:

  • How to set up an attractive webpage
  • How to prioritize your social media efforts
  • How to use review feedback to interact with customers
  • How to optimize your ability to be found on Google
  • How to combine traditional and digital advertising
  • and many more

Nick Choat has witnessed the evolution of digital marketing. He started at a young age, working in his parents' small, hometown grocery store in rural Tennessee, where he learned about customer service and loyalty. When he was offered a management position with Kroger, he made the bold move to exit the food industry, and took a chance on a degree in software development long before the tech boom of the 1990s. His first job was for Boeing, followed by several years consulting businesses for Ernst & Young. He was on board with Disney when they pioneered the online streaming of hi-def television, a revolutionary move when corporations were still fearful of the shifting marketplace. After realizing that he wanted to exchange his life in corporate America for one with more autonomy in his business, he bought a Sports Clips franchise and set a personal goal to empower all small business owners to utilize the tools at their fingertips.

Online or Flatline gives small business owners an easy to follow, affordable guide and a strong plan of action for creating a successful and valuable online presence.

My Take on the Book
This is a great book that really allows you to explore your organization on a whole new level. I loved his vision for what leadership looks like and the mix of technical and in person concepts that can be done to motivate your team and your organization to move to a new level of productivity and efficiency!

Book Review - The Goldfish Boy

The Goldfish Boy

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Lisa Thompson's debut novel is a page-turning mystery with an emotionally-driven, complex character study at its core -- like Rear Window meets The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Matthew Corbin suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. He hasn't been to school in weeks. His hands are cracked and bleeding from cleaning. He refuses to leave his bedroom. To pass the time, he observes his neighbors from his bedroom window, making mundane notes about their habits as they bustle about the cul-de-sac.

When a toddler staying next door goes missing, it becomes apparent that Matthew was the last person to see him alive. Suddenly, Matthew finds himself at the center of a high-stakes mystery, and every one of his neighbors is a suspect. Matthew is the key to figuring out what happened and potentially saving a child's life... but is he able to do so if it means exposing his own secrets, and stepping out from the safety of his home?

My Take on the Book
This is a great book that really did a great job at creating a compelling story that really made you come back for more. As someone that loves a great mystery, this author has . it right. This book provides you with a story written for the middle school audience, readers of all ages intriguing characters, filled with drama and even some action throughout the book. While this is written for niddle school ages, the content within could be applicable to all! All-in-all this was a fast read that I highly encourage all to read!

Book Review - Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 2 The Hammer of Thor

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 2 The Hammer of Thor

 photo disclaimer_zpsd3x74ej2.jpg

About the Book
Thor's hammer is missing again. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon--the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn't just lost, it has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can't retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer's return is the gods' worst enemy, Loki--and the price he wants is very high.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that was truly a page turner. Not only do you get the characters that you loved from the first book, you also get to meet some new ones too. You also get to explore the background of some of the main characters more deeply and by the end you have a better understanding of much of their motivation, which added some nice clarification. The book flowed nicely and from chapter to chapter I was really encouraged to read more and more to get to the conclusion.

On of the things that was so great about this series is the wit and personalities that are given to all of the characters within the book. I also have to say I appreciated the fact that there was a gender-fluid character in the book. This really showed that Riordan understands that times are changing!

In the end this was an amazing addition to the series!

My Take on the Book
In this book the author speaks about helping leaders find their "voice," which he attempts to do by using the acronym V.O.I.C.E. - Values, Outcomes, Influence, Courage, Expression. This was a powerful book that offers practical advice as well as forms that will walk leaders through a step-by-step approach through doing what you can change your own leadership style to become a strong leader in the end.
The acronym was helpful and easy to remember. Another positive about the book are the case studies that the author shares throughout all of the chapters. On top of this the end of the chapter reflections really make you think deeply!

Overall, this is a great book that will make you think about leadership in a whole new way.
