Book Review - Goal

Goal

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
A lyrical, strikingly illustrated story celebrates the unifying power of soccer.

In a dusty township in South Africa, Ajani and his friends have earned a brand-new, federation-size soccer ball.

They kick. They dribble. They run. They score. These clever boys are football champions! But when a crew of bullies tries to steal their ball, will Ajani and his friends be able to beat them at their own game?

My Take on the Book
Mina Javaherbin has written story about young boys in South Africa who love to play soccer. The boys do not have fancy team uniforms or shoes, they use a bucket for their goal, and they did not have a "real" soccer ball until Ajani received one as an award in school.

Ajani need to be watchful because there are bullies who will steal their ball , The bullies do show up while the boys are playing but they are clever and are able to conceal the real soccer ball.

This is a great story about friendship, perseverance, the resiliency of children to adapt to their situations in life, and how the love of soccer is a bond for the boys.

Book Review - Soccer Star

Soccer Star

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
Just in time for the World Cup, an inspiring story of a Brazilian boy who dreams of being a soccer star — and the sister who steps in to help his team win a game.

When Paulo Marcelo Feliciano becomes a soccer star, crowds will cheer his famous name! Then his mother won’t have to work long hours, and he won’t have to work all day on a fishing boat. For now, Paulo takes care of his little sister Maria (she teaches him reading, he teaches her soccer moves) and walks her to school, stopping to give his teammates cheese buns as they set out to shine people’s shoes or perform for the tourist crowd. At day’s end, it’s time to plan the game, where Givo will bounce, Carlos will kick, and Jose will fly! But when Jose falls on his wrist, will the team finally break the rules and let a girl show her stuff? Set in a country whose resilient soccer stars are often shaped by poverty, this uplifting tale of transcending the expected scores a big win for all.

My Take on the Book
SOCCER STAR is an uplifting story that takes place in Brazil. It is about children who love to play soccer and wish to become stars in this game as Pele became a soccer star. Pele was from a similar poverty situation. However the story has a deeper meaning too. The children live in poverty. They work to earn money for their families and they see soccer as an opportunity to financially assist their families.

You will read about the support and friendship of the boys but also the community in which they live. You will see the support from the adults and the positive attitudes portrayed by everyone.

I see this book as possibly opening up a discussion between you and your child about courage and having high expectations or goals. Ask your child about their hopes and dreams for their future and how they may accomplish what they would like to do.

Book Review - Maisy Plays Soccer

Maisy Plays Soccer
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
Wow, look at the crowd! Maisy and friends play a rousing game of soccer in a read-aloud sure to have aspiring little players cheering.

Maisy and her friends can’t wait to play soccer! Maisy puts on her uniform, laces up her sneakers, and heads to the field. Charlie, Tallulah, and Dotty are on the blue team, while Maisy, Cyril, and Eddie are on the red. Let’s play! Soon enough the game heats up, with plenty of action, excitement, and suspense. Who will be the first team to make a goal? Whatever the score, it’s all in good fun, and everyone is still the best of friends at the end!

My Take on the Book
Lucy's book is perfect for a young child. The text is large and the illustrations are colorful. Maisy and her animal friends like to play soccer. They divide into teams. The author uses soccer terminology in the book which will help introduce your child to the game of soccer. I really liked the fact that the characters showed good sportsmanship throughout their game of soccer.
