Museum provides free curriculum just in time for Science Fair season

Science fairs are a great way for young students to research a topic of interest and gain valuable knowledge in science through the hands-on experience of research and experiments. Our society relies more on science every day, and science fairs give students the opportunity to become more knowledgeable about how the world around them works. To help students brainstorm, research, and perform fun scientific experiments this spring, the Museum of Vision, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is providing free curriculum guides to help illuminate the exciting science of vision.

The Museum of Vision provides educational materials for physicians, teachers, and parents interested in teaching children about the eye, vision, and ophthalmology, making education affordable and fun. The Museum’s entire range of curriculum offerings aims to teach children about the fascinating and spectacular science of vision.

One of their popular guides, Art and Vision: Seeing in 3D, explores the concepts of vision and special visual techniques that help to create the illusion of depth. It includes sections on size scaling, overlapping, atmospheric perspective, and linear perspective. The first chapter of the guide teaches children about the eye’s anatomy and how the human visual system works to help us see in 3D. This guide also includes activities for youngsters and provides all appropriate handouts. It is most suitable for children ages 11 and up, and is offered free of charge.

Also offered are teacher workbooks, created by the Museum to focus on the human eye, the differences between human and animal vision, how the brain processes images like optical illusions and 3D, and the importance on keeping eyes healthy. These and all of the curriculum guides, Healthy Eyes, Healthy Body, Eye Openers, Animal Eyes, and Art and Vision are filled with discussion points and fun interactive activities to keep children’s interest and build knowledge. Each of these guides can also be downloaded for free on the museum’s website at www.museumofvision.org/education.

Smithsonian Magazine Proclaims September 24, 2011 Seventh Annual Museum Day

our money’s no good here: Smithsonian magazine has designated Saturday, September 24 its annual Museum Day.  An enormously successful initiative that celebrates education, culture and the dissemination of knowledge, Museum Day invites museum partners to emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities by opening their doors free of charge to anyone who downloads a Museum Day Admission Card from Smithsonian.com/museumday.

This year Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is participating in Museum Day and museum visitors will be encouraged to donate to this leading global breast cancer organization.

“Museum Day, inclusive by design, fulfills Smithsonian Media’s core goal of making cultural education accessible—and approachable—across America,” said Jennifer Hicks, Group Publisher, Smithsonian Media. “We’re very heartened to partner with Susan G. Komen in conjunction with Museum Day and we’re looking forward to reaching even more attendees.”

Experiencing exponential growth since its inception in 2005, this year’s Smithsonian magazine Museum Day is poised to outdo the 2010 event in museum participation and public attendance.  In 2010, museum goers downloaded 227,747 tickets resulting in more than 500,000 museum-goers visiting over 1,300 venues in all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

The Museum Day Ticket is available to download beginning in July at www.smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the official pass will gain free admission for two people to participating museums and cultural venues. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.   For more information about Smithsonian magazine Museum Day 2011 and links to participating museums’ and supporters’ sites, please visit Smithsonian.com/museumday

Your Passport to the World…Gratis. Top Museums Nationwide Grant Free Admission on Smithsonian Magazine’s 6th Annual Museum Day

Mark your calendars: Smithsonian magazine has designated Saturday, September 25, 2010 its sixth annual Museum Day, presented by Toyota on behalf of the redesigned 2011 Avalon. Participating museums and cultural institutions nationwide will open their doors free of charge to all visitors who download the Museum Day Ticket from Smithsonian.com.  A journey to celebrate our world’s dynamic heritage and cultural life, participating Museum Day venues emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington, D.C.-based facilities.

Museum Day 2010 is poised to be the largest to date, outdoing last year’s record-breaking event.  Over 300,000 museum-goers and 1,300 venues in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participated in Museum Day 2009. Last year, two million visitors logged on to www.smithsonian.com/museumday to learn more about the program.

“Whether you redeem your Museum Day Ticket at a venue in your own backyard or you take a trip to explore a new site, this is your pass for a free journey to celebrate culture, learning and knowledge—part of our core values at Smithsonian,” said Kerry Bianchi, Group Publisher, Smithsonian Media“This year, we look forward to enhancing the Museum Day experience for museum-goers and online visitors alike through our partnership with Toyota Avalon.”

Presenting sponsor Toyota, on behalf of the redesigned Avalon, will provide on-site activities including docent tours, interactive trivia contests and giveaways at select museums in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and St. Petersburg, Florida. The initiative extends well beyond on-site activities, with broadcast, print and online experiences. In Smithsonian magazine in-book and online, Toyota will present the “Featured Five,” a listing that encourages visitors to learn about and visit participating museums and venues. Additionally, for each visitor who inquires about the Toyota Avalon online, Toyota will donate $1—up to $10,000 total—to museum programming nationwide.

“Smithsonian’s efforts to educate and inspire the public align perfectly with the Avalon customer’s desire for cultural enrichment and passion for their communities,” said Tim Morrison, corporate manager of marketing communications for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “We are thrilled to enhance the Museum Day experience for visitors nationwide through our multi-platform partnership.”

Beginning in July, the Museum Day Ticket will be available for download from www.smithsonian.com/museumday.
