My Take on the Book
Father's Day will be celebrated soon and this little book has arrived in time as a special gift for your very own special DAD. This delightful book will be a wonderful way to show your Dad how special he is. The book is filled with quotes from many famous individuals. They were written by women and men. The quotes are taken from actors, writers, past U.S. Presidents, comedians , daughters, and even from proverbs.

Here is one written by Bindi Irwin . She is a known actress and TV personality. She wrote about her dad:My daddy was my hero.He was always there for me when I needed him. But most of all he was fun.

Book Review - Pittsburgh Dad: Everything Your Dad Has Said to You

Pittsburgh Dad: Everything Your Dad Has Said to You
 photo disclaimer_zpsflpjm0lf.jpg

About the Book
When Pittsburgh Dad debuted on YouTube three years ago, creators Chris Preksta and Curt Wootton little suspected their sitcom would receive more than sixteen million views and turn their blue-collar everyman into a nationally known figure. Illustrated with hilarious black-and-white photos, Pittsburgh Dad shares the best of the best, from rants about swimming pool rules to reflections on coaching little league to curmudgeonly movie reviews. With its heavy dose of nostalgia and pitch-perfect sensibility, Pittsburgh Dad will have readers laughing in recognition, especially those who love recent blockbusters like Sh*t My Dad Says and Dad Is Fat.

My Take on the Book
This was hilarious, book that really looked at being a dad in a while new way. Tons of witty one-liners and things you could imagine some dads would say, it hits close to home, close enough that it is very funny. The advice was down to earth, in your face, and practical. No matter what type of dad you are, you will laugh out loud at the audacity of some of the statements of this dad. A good book and a quick read, and one that was thoroughly enjoyable.

Make Grilling Easy For Dad This Fathers Day With The Porter!

Porter: BBQ prep containers + serving dish
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

One-trip grilling

This summer helper is smokin’ hot. Porter is a multi-purpose BBQ tray that eliminates extra trips between your kitchen and grill. Containers with lids keep raw food safely separated, while a serving platter and condiment caddy hold everything a grill chef needs at hand. It'll ensure your next BBQ is as perfectly timed as your meat.

Porter: BBQ prep containers + serving dish

My Take on the Porter
I don’t know how many of you have ever had this happen to you. You are grilling something for dinner. You place your meat on one plate to carry out to the grill. Once the meat is on, you have to then take that plate back in, place it in the dishwasher and get another plate for the finished meat. This does not even take into account if you are grilling vegetables or other items. What you end up with is a ton of plates that you have to wash because you cannot let the raw meat touch the raw vegetables and vice-versa.

Porter: BBQ prep containers + serving dish

Enter the Porter. This innovative product save you so much effort to get your items to the grill to be cooked and then in the lower tray allows you to bring the cooked items back inside. Thus, all of your items will get to the grill and back in far fewer plates and everything is enclosed in one product instead of having many plates that now need to be washed and far more time and effort extended.

Porter: BBQ prep containers + serving dish

I came to find that the product itself was well made and worked as was claimed. I found that it saved me a ton of time and effort in the end and I was very impressed with the overall design and usability of the product itself.

I highly recommend this to all, especially those of you that enjoy grilling!

Book Review - Confessions of the World's Best Father

Confessions of the World's Best Father
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
In CONFESSIONS OF THE WORLD'S BEST FATHER (Gotham Books, May 2014, $18.00), author Dave Engledow confronts his worst parenting nightmares through cleverly crafted photographs. Engledow has created chuckle-worthy scenes of child-rearing combined with witty journal entries explaining each photo’s bizarre backstory. As if these hilarious memorable what-ifs weren’t cute enough, Alice and Dad made a video commentary on their favorite photo-shoots (she’s quite the critic!).

What started as a personal photo project for family and friends has ignited into an internet sensation. With skillful digital manipulation and more than a little patients on the part of Alice Bee (World’s Best Daughter), this comical portrayal of what not to do as a first-time dad pairs the visual aesthetics of Norman Rockwell with a darkly sense of humor. Watch the adorable Alice Bee grow up under the watchful eyes of her dad, as they both:

  • Learn to mix and pour martinis for when Mom gets home
  • Show how carving pumpkins, inside-out is the only way to go
  • Perform house improvements… sort of
  • Train for the 2016 Olympic High Dive (it’s never too early to start)
  • Find the many uses for a bidet
  • Prove the washing machine is a perfectly good bathtub
  • And much, much more.

My Take on the Book
This was a hilarious book that really shows the innovation of one father and what he could do with his child while mom is away. There were so many amazing pictures of the author doing things that I could only imagine doing, but he makes it work and he makes you laugh along the way. The other things that was great about the book is that you get to see his daughter growing up right in front of your eyes, and you get to continue to see the fun she is having too. It will be interesting to see how long the author can continue doing this as she gets older and how long she wants to keep being a willing participant, I hope it will be for a long time to come. AT the end of the book you are in for a treat, as the author shares some tips that are priceless... just wait!

Book Review - The Good Dad

The Good Dad: Becoming the Father You Were Meant to Be
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
As president of Focus on the Family, a dad to two sons, and a man who didn’t really have a dad growing up, Jim Daly has a passion for fathers. He wants to see families thrive, and that starts with dads who help set the tone for the household, and whose influence on their children has been widely documented by social science.

Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, is an expert in fatherhood—in part because his own "fathers" failed him so badly. His biological dad was an alcoholic. His stepfather deserted him. His foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All were out of Jim's life by the time he turned 13.

Isn’t it odd—and just like God—that the director of the leading organization on family turned out to be a guy whose own background as a child was so pretty messed up? Or could it be that successful parenting is discovered not in the “perfect” peaceful household but in the midst of battles and messy situations, where God must constantly be called to the scene?

Using his own expertise, humor, and inexhaustible wealth of stories, Jim will show fathers that God can make them a good dad, a great dad, in spite of the way they’ve grown up or the mistakes they’ve made. It’s not about becoming a perfect father. It’s about trying to become a better father each and every day, building relationships through love, grace, patience, and fun—and helping children grow into the men and women they’re meant to be.

My Take on the Book
This is the type of book that will make you truly reconsider what fatherhood means to you and to your family. The book is spiritually based and makes numerous connections to God’s plan for fathers in society today. The book is poignant and well-written and shares personal experiences of the author along with the goals that this author has to become a stronger, more engaged dad. The book is deep and gives readers a true glimpse into what is at the core of fatherhood. I know that I, for one, found that the book truly engaged me and had me look back at my own traits and characteristics, and help me to reevaluate. One of the difficult things to grapple with in this book are the stories that the author shared about being raised in a home with an abusive father. Though I say this, the stories are there to inspire other fathers to become better. You will learn so much of this book and at the same time will connect a deeper level with the word of God as it relates to being an amazing dad.

Book Review - Wisdom for Dad: Advice for Dad In 140 Characters or Less

Wisdom for Dad: Advice for Dad In 140 Characters or Less

 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
By accessing the social web and the power of the dad crowd, Wisdom For Dad cuts through the clutter to deliver brief, witty, snippets of wisdom every dad will appreciate. With 85K plus Twitter Followers (@dudetodad), popular author/blogger Hugh Weber delivers a terrific follow-up to Dude to Dad that again aims to help ordinary dudes become extraordinary dads.

Given that dads today communicate primarily via texts, tweets, and Facebook status updates, Wisdom For Dad features a compilation of more than 100 of the funniest, most inspiring, and notable posts geared toward today's generation of dads to help them as they journey through fatherhood.

My Take on the Book
This was a fun book that really captured the true essence of being a father. As a father myself I know that I don't have a lot of time to be able to spend on parenting books, however, this book gives you so much wisdom and so little words. The book itself is broken down into small kernels of knowledge, 140 characters at a time.

The other share some great insights into what being a dad really means, and he shares it in a way that is both lighthearted and full of thought. The book itself is set up to provide direct, hands-on advice and resources for any father that picks up this book. The author shares both experiences and sage wisdom that will help any new or old father to become even stronger in their role.

All-in-all this was a great book that I would recommend giving to any father, as he will completely appreciate it.

Book Review - Daddy's Little Girl

Daddy's Little Girl
 photo disclaimer2_zps8af35ac1.jpg

About the Book
A heartwarming tale of a father's love and growing relationship with his daughter; the story follows Daddy's Little Girl from infancy to maturity. Beautifully illustrated by Canadian artist Carol Matsuyama this book makes a thoughtful gift for any occasion.

My Take on the Book
As a father of girls, I completely related to this story. There is a special bond between father and daughter that is hard to explain, but this book does a wonderful job at doing so. This book shares the emotional journey that any father goes through as his daughter grows into a woman and it is a journey that I am on currently (and it is moving way too quickly if I do say so myself). I know that even though I may not be ready for them to grow up, they will, and this story is a reminder to treasure the time that I have, developing lasting memories and doing whatever I can to make these moments last!

Cooper & Kid Introduces Catch - A New EZine for Dads

Being a dad just got even better. Cooper and Kid (www.cooperandkid.com), the retail brand that champions dads through dedicated products and services designed to help men embrace their mission into fatherhood, announces the launch of a new online publication for dads: Catch (http://cooperandkid.com/catch/). Catch, e-published on Cooper and Kid’s newly redesigned website, released its first issue on August 19, 2013.

Created by Cooper and Kid founder Nichole Smaglick, Catch offers honest and often humorous content contributed by a diverse selection of dads to help all men with children navigate through fatherhood. “Catch is an intelligent and accessible online portal for dads to explore, celebrate, and navigate through what it means to be a father, as well as enhance the critical rite of passage into fatherhood,” says Smaglick. “While the market is saturated with content geared towards moms and expecting moms, there are only a few scattered resources that dads can turn to, and Catch satisfies this void for all fathers.

Articles will be categorized into eight topic pillars: The Meatball Man Date – 1 on 1’s with dads; Cowboy Compass – outdoor skills and stories; Play – projects and toys; First, Get the Pancake – cooking and food as a dad; Manual Shift – exploring the gear-change of fatherhood; Body Shop – workouts and nutrition; Art and Entertainment – books, movies, TV, music, videos, apps, games; and Battle Zone – a weekly face-off for all things dad, man and parenting. A ninth pillar is expected to follow soon after launch. New content will be published daily, Monday through Friday. Contributors include real dads and also celebrity dads and newsmakers.

“Becoming a dad changes a man’s life not only in his perception of self and personal growth, but also how he manages his free-time, career, finances, health, relationships and inner moral compass, says Smaglick. “Dads will explore that metamorphosis of becoming a father with humor and straight-talk honesty, discover dad and non-dad tips on cool things to do, as well as ways to handle new situations and poignant manhood fodder. Topics and writers will evolve over time, so every time dads return, they will ‘Catch’ something new.”

The All American Daddy is strong enough to tear open toys sealed in plastic; gentle enough to wipe away the tears and brave enough to weather a supermarket temper tantrum. When he wears his All American Daddy Tee he’s a capable daddy, a strong daddy---and most importantly a proud daddy!

This breathable cotton tee was created for proud, strong, American dads. This tee features the American flag stretched across the chest, “All American Daddy” fashioned across the back, and a little well-earned knowledge tucked on the inside-back collar of the t-shirt. Remember dads, “any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy.”

My Take on the Product
Talk about getting to flaunt that I am a dad. This was a great short for any dad to wear. Not only can this be a great shirt for the new dad, but for me, a father of two, it was a fun shirt to get to simply tell the world that I am a dad and am proud of it. Book Review - How To Be A Great Dad—It’s In Your Hands

About the Book
Recent *studies have shown that fathers who are active and engaged in the lives of their children play an important role in child development — making their kids smarter and better behaved. Despite this, many fathers just don’t step up to the plate. They either don’t know how, or don’t want to be actively involved with their children. Niagara Falls author Carmen Elefante has seen this and wants to change things. His new book, How To Be A Great Dad—It’s In Your Hands, is a collection of uplifting stories, useful activities, and thoughtful analysis on the nature of fatherhood. How To Be A Great Dad is a culmination of Carmen’s lifetime of observation and personal development. This compelling 128 page book includes:

  • Tips on how to creatively connect with your children with meaningful everyday contact.
  • Ways to have inexpensive and easy fun with your children—including games and fun family recipes.
  • Advice on addressing your own insecurities and issues so that they don’t harm your children.

Carmen’s goal is to help all fathers and caregivers be loving, responsible, and fully involved parents. The book is available on Amazon, and through www.carmen-sense.com

  • Sarkadi et al, Fathers’ Involvement and Children’s Developmental Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Studies, Acta Paediatrica, 2008.
  • Concordia Longitudinal Risk Research Project, Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that was set up in such a great way. I found myself plowing through this in one sitting, as the text provided so many great ideas, tips and resources that any new or existing father would appreciate knowing. The book is straight forward, and is set up to really help any father to be the best dad that he can be.  Not only does the book offer great resources, but it also has quite a few tips that you can enact in your own home with your kids. The ideas are easy and inexpensive and anyone can pick one out today to start having fun right away with the whole family. All-in-all this was a great book that I would recommend to any father as it was a very enlightening read and one that will open your own eyes to ways in which you too can be a truly great dad!

Book Review - Top Drawer Dads

About the Book
Do you remember your dad’s top drawer? What was in it? What do these things represent to you?

Chances are, items in your dad’s top drawer match many of the things that are in your top drawer. It is in this drawer that children smell, feel and touch their father. Here they discover the same safety and warmth many children have experienced in their visits to their father’s top drawer.

Dr. Thomas F. Mahan and Richard Nicorvo founded the company Top Drawer Dads and accompanying website to celebrate fathers and create an online learning and sharing community.

“Society pays little attention to regular fathers – the normal ‘Joe’ who loves his wife and kids, generally likes what he does for a living and contributes to the larger community,” says Mahan. “The normal dad just does what needs to be done to raise responsible kids.”

The book version of Top Drawer Dads, which is available in May, encourages positive parenting and attempts to counter negative messages about fathers.

In Top Drawer Dads, readers are encouraged to re-live memories of being a father or of being fathered, become aware of the power of being a father, see examples of other Top Drawer Dads and have shared a safe, yet intimate, message of appreciation and love.

“Most of the literature available to dads focuses on evaluative issues and the things dads do wrong,” Mahan says. “They zero in on dads who are either absent, alcoholic, divorced, broken psychologically or in an identity crisis. Rarely is popular literature helpful or reinforcing to regular fathers and their families.”

For more information, visit www.topdrawerdads.com.

About the Authors
Dr. Thomas F. Mahan is CEO of Top Drawer Dads and the Chairman of The Work Institute – a workforce and workplace research company. Prior to founding Top Drawer Dads and The Work Institute, Tom held consultation, counseling, research, and general management roles with Spherion, Cigna, and Prentice-Hall. Earlier in his career, Tom counseled troubled and troubling families with the Edwin Gould Foundation in New York and at Cumberland House School in Nashville, Tennessee. Professor Mahan, as time allows, is adjunct faculty at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Mahan is well known through his teaching and conference speaking with national and international organizations. Tom is a behavioral consultant, executive counselor and advisor, and the co-author of The Why Factor: Winning With Workforce Intelligence.

Tom is the husband of Dr. Beverly B. Mahan, the father and father-in-law of Lindsay and Joshua Lee, and the father of William.

Marjie Aldom Smith is a professional writer/editor who has worked for more than three decades as a journalist and communications professional in Canada and the United States. She has won more than a dozen regional and national awards for her writing on both sides of the border. Her work has been carried in The Toronto Star and on CBC Radio. Prior to moving to the U.S., 10 years ago, she was responsible for communications at Nipissing University in Ontario, Canada. Her freelance career in the U.S. has included working as an interim communications director in Pittsburgh and producing a multiple-award-winning, not-for-profit newsletter.

Marjie is married to The Rev. Dr. Jerry Smith and the mother and mother-in-law of Adrienne and Dwayne, Nathan and Jasmine, and Aaron and Meredith. She is the grandmother to Luke, Mila, Madilyn and Eli.

My Take on the Book
This was a book that brought back great memories of my own father. I always was in awe in thinking about all of the things my dad did with his life and can remember his top drawer and all of the things that it held. This book makes you appreciate the things that your father did for you while at the same time making you think deeply about what kind of father you want to be yourself. The book is a great collection of average fathers that are doing great things which is just the type of thing that dads like myself need and want to see! This was a great book that I highly recommend all dads read!

Book Review - Dad to Dad: Parenting Like a Pro

About the Book
Dad to Dad: Parenting Like a Pro by pediatrician-dad David Hill, M.D. (American Academy of Pediatrics, June 1, 2012) is a parenting book catered specifically to fathers that has been coined as “the What to Expect When You’re Expecting for dads,” (Dan Tynan, Family Circle). Drawing on his own professional and personal experiences as a pediatrician and father, Dr. Hill uses empathy and an index of accessible advice—covering every stage of child’s life from birth to adolescence—to show the ropes of dadhood. Of course, Dr. Hill’s sage advice is not without a good helping of humor, he makes no shortage of jokes at the new dad’s expense. Part of being a dad, after all, is not taking yourself too seriously.

About the Author
David L. Hill, MD, FAAP, is a vice president of Cape Fear Pediatrics, an adjunct assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill Medical School, and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communications and Media. He is a columnist for the Wilmington Parent and a consultant on child care issues for local and national radio, television, and internet-based media. He lives in Wilmington, North Carolina.

My Take on the Book
This was a practical, no-nonsense kind of book for any current father or a soon to be dad. I love the fact that the book covers so many areas that a father typically will have to cover. The author does this with a style that is engaging, and one that helps the reader to easily understand what he can do to change and better the situation. One of the things I liked best were the sections entitled "what You Can Do" as these were very practical pieces of advice and things to think about in relation to the topic being discussed. Even more, the layout of the book is conducive to learning and I know that for me at least, I wish that this book would have been out when I was a first time dad, and I plan to pass this book along to other dads as I believe that they will be able to learn from this too.

Book Review - Be a Better Dad Today: Ten Tools Every Father Needs

About the Book
Be a Better Dad Today! is a book for every one of us who want to be a better Fathers for our family. Written in an encouraging, fun to read style by bestselling author Gregory W. Slayton, Be a Better Dad Today! is designed to help each of us become better Fathers, better Husbands and better Men. It is bound to be an instant classic on the subject of Fatherhood. Background for Be a Better Dad Today!: Professor Slayton has studied the art and practice of Fatherhood on six different continents over the past 25 years. He grew up in a difficult family environment even before his father abandoned his family. The last time he spoke with his father, Gregory was in the hospital and close to death. His dad cut short the conversation, promising to call back shortly. For 25 years, he never did. His father died in 2007, alone and in great pain. As Professor Slayton writes “he was the saddest man I have ever known.” This book seeks to help each of its readers to be the best Fathers they can be…and overcome whatever issues they may have inherited or grown up with.

Professor Slayton has been married to his wife Marina for 22+ years. They have four great kids, the eldest two of whom are attending Ivy League universities. As a family they have weathered many storms – as all families must. But by God’s grace and with His help, all things are possible. Like its author, Be a Better Dad Today! is a work in process.

The Ten Basic Fatherhood Tools are highlighted in Be A Better Dad Today!! Like anyone trying to do a difficult job, Dads need the right tools to get the Fatherhood job done right. Be a Better Dad Today! I devoted an entire chapter to each of the Ten Tools Check out excerpts from each of the chapters

My Take on the Book
This is a great book for any dad today. The book is inspiring and will encourage any father to become better than he already is. Whether you are a father already or you are a father to be, this is a book that will make you rethink your impressions of fatherhood and what it means altogether. I loved how practical the book was and how easily you could incorporate the book into your everyday life. The questions alone that the author asks are ones that made me take pause to reevaluate my own skills as a father and think about ways in which I can be a better father in the future and you will too. So if you are looking for a great book for yourself, or for a great gift for that special dad, this is definitely one that I would highly recommend!

This revealing and touching film asks what happens when a generation's ultimate anti-authoritarians – punk rockers – become society's ultimate authorities – dads. With a large chorus of punk rock's leading men - Blink-182's Mark Hoppus, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath - THE OTHER F WORD follows Jim Lindberg, a 20-year veteran of the skate punk band Pennywise, on his hysterical and moving journey from belting his band's anthem ”F--k Authority,” to embracing his ultimately authoritarian role in mid-life: fatherhood.
Other dads featured in the film include skater Tony Hawk, Art Alexakis (Everclear), Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Tony Adolescent (The Adolescents), Fat Mike (NOFX), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), and many others.
