About the Book
The Who, the What, and the When: 65 Artists Illustrate the Secret Sidekicks of History by Jenny Volvovski, Julia Rothman, and Matt Lamothe ($24.95, November 2014). This offbeat illustrated history reveals 65 “sidekicks of history”—people you've probably never heard of, but who helped shape the word as we know it. Muses and neighbors, friends and relatives, accomplices and benefactors—such as Michael and Joy Brown, who gifted Harper Lee a year’s wages so she could write To Kill a Mockingbird, or John Ordway, who walked with Lewis and Clark every step of the way. Each eye-opening story of these unsung heroes is written by a notable historian and illustrated by a top indie artist.

My Take on the Book
This was such an interesting book that explores the people behind the people that you have heard about or have been intrigued about. Think about this as the people who made famous people great. The book goes into depth about these people and what they did to help their counterparts become greater. In many cases I would have to say that without many of these people the other people who they supported would not have come to notoriety.  I found each of the essays to be intriguing and engaging. I was drawn in and found that I really enjoyed reading this to find out more about these people, but even more so, about the people that they were connected with. For anyone that enjoys history, this will share with you the unwritten history of so many people that should have been better known than they were!
