Book Review - Whispers of The Greybull

About the Book
Fifteen years ago, while on a hunting trip to Wyoming, Spokane based landscape architect Stephen B. Smart fell in love with mountain wilderness around the town of Meeteetse. Now he’s combined and applied his passion, immense knowledge, and appreciation of the outdoors and written a very realistic contemporary western novel about a man who tries to put his life back together after having lost almost everything.

In his new book Whispers of The Greybull, Smart weaves a tale of adventure filled with mystery and deceit, set in the wilderness of Wyoming in the 1930’s.

It is 1937 and Cole Morgan has lost everything—his family, his dream as a professional football player, and the solace of a home he has known for over twenty-one years. At his parents’ funeral in Montana, he is approached by an old rodeo friend of his father and offered a job on The Greybull, a massive ranch located near the small town of Meeteetse, Wyoming. Cole plans to lose himself in the ranch’s vastness and the intensity of ranch life. After falling gravely ill upon arrival he’s nursed back to health by the ranchers’ beautiful daughter. The pressures of real life hit hard when the ranch is struck by drought, a tough unscrupulous businessman, and the cruelest side of an untamed wilderness. When his best friend is savagely killed and Cole stumbles upon a clue that implies that there’s a lost gold mine hidden on the property. The harder he searches for the truth, the more entangled he becomes in a world full of secrecy, deceit, and murder. Is there gold up in the hills?

The spark for his motivation was to create a compelling story about hardships faced by real men and offer a realistic glimpse into an incredible period in the history of the American west.

“I sought to create iconic real-life western characters and capture my love of the land” said Smart.

His book is a truly enjoyable read that will keep you hooked from beginning to end. He is adept at describing intense situations and his writing conveys his deep admiration for the people, the land and environments he knows so well. Against a rich natural tapestry, he tells a tension filled and shocking story of greed, love and violence and dedication.
