Book Review - Motivated by Passion, Held Back by Fear

About the Book

Motivated by Passion, Held Back by Fear by Tchicaya Ellis Robertson, Ph.D. and Sheila Taylor-Downer, Certified Life Coach, inspires readers to break past the familiar boundaries of inertia and begin living their passions.  Among the many valuable lessons that they offer readers, the authors teach that by focusing on our passions, the money will follow, that we must cultivate our natural talents that big dreams equal big rewards, and warns that if we do not choose our destinies, someone else will.

To help readers to achieve these goals and be successful in their quests to live their dreams, Robertson and Taylor-Downer provide the “10 Key Principles of Passion.”

To live your passion:
  • Follow your heart: Trust that wealth will be the natural progression of focusing on what truly makes you happy.
  • Be persistent: Don’t quit.
  • Have faith: Have faith that God will give you the wisdom and the guidance to find your passion.
  • Forget what they say: Ignore the naysayers and believe in yourself and in your ability to live your passion
  • Do a little everyday: Do something, no matter how small, every day that will move you toward living your passion.
  • Set goals and make plans: Follow those plans, and measure your progress.
  • Take risks: Anything worth having is worth taking a few calculated risks for.
  • Develop your natural talents: The better you are at it, the better you will feel about it.
  • Dream: Dream big or go home.
  • Lead by Example. Don’t just talk the talk; walk the walk.

The authors urge reader to reflect on his/her natural talent, as “Once you find it, you’ve found your passion.”  Although you may have a natural gift, taking classes or lessons to excel in your chosen area may help you to hone your skills and give you more confidence in pursuing it professionally.  Robertson and Taylor-Downer teach the reader that “doing what makes you happy IS what will make you rich… rich spiritually, physically, mentally, and yes, financially.”  Once you have removed the boredom and misery in your life to discover “richness and fulfillment,” the financial reward follows.

While big dreams reap big rewards, the authors urge readers to “reframe your dream as a goal” and then to “reduce that goal to a clear and measurable objective” and write a “vision statement”, which is a statement about where someone sees themselves in the future.  Although every pursued dream involves a degree of risk, it should be taken after it has been calculated and weighed.

Motivated by Passion, Held Back by Fear takes a practical approach to pursuing dreams that is equally inspirational and applicable.  Robertson and Taylor-Downer help readers to unlock the potential that their lives hold that is manageable and approachable, providing solid advice and helping readers to realize that the seemingly insurmountable is, indeed, within reach.

My Take on the Book
This book takes a practical approach to encouraging the readers to pursue their dreams. You have the potential to focus on your passions, talents, and dreams and to make them a reality in your life. You can choose the path your life will take and with that path find the success and rewards to bring you the happiness and fulfillment you deserve.

So how does one accomplish this?

The author lays out ten principles.

  1. Follow your heart. Do what makes you happy, not what makes you rich. What do you love to do and then just do it.
  2. Be persistent. You have to find the will to keep going in the face of adversity.
  3. Have faith. Seek Him first and pray. Ask for guidance and then thank God constantly for His continued blessings.
  4. Forget what "they" say. Disregard those who give you negativity.Don't let them allow you to feel you cannot do something. Believe in yourself.
  5. Do a little everyday. Don't be afraid to step out in faith and seek opportunities. These little things you do each day will get you a step closer to living your passion.
  6. Set goals and make plans. Follow those plans and measure your progress.
  7. Take risks. Take risks that will help you to live your passions.
  8. Develop your natural talents. What is your special talent? Develop it/them. Take classes or lessons so you can excel in that area.
  9. Dream. Create a dream as a goal and then make it a measurable objective.Write a vision statement and then make a plan to accomplish it.
  10. Lead by example. Don't just talk the talk- walk the walk. How do you view yourself? How do others view you? What we do speaks volumes on who we are and where we will go in life.

What are obstacles to succeeding in our passion path? Fear is a great one. Why does it have so much power over us?Fear cannot exist if you do not feed it.

Another passion killer are those people who stand in the way of allowing you to achieve your goal. They want you to fail.

The lack of motivation will also become an obstacle .
You need to have a positive attitude and get rid of any negative thoughts.

Living your passion means you live the desires of your heart. You create your vision and your life's direction is clear.

So what is your passion? Is it your family, writing a book, becoming a watercolor artist, acting on stage, completing a computer class, learning Italian, cooking healthy food, exercising, etc.

Take the time to analyze and begin your new adventure without fear!
