My Take on the Book
Before I write further I must say I wish I had had a book like this when I was studying math in school. It has everything mathematical. The explanations in the text are accompanied by visuals. The text is easy to understand and the examples are excellent. I could see this book not only used by teachers and students, but also by parents or grandparents who assist their children with their math. This book should definitely be a resource available in all our grades levels from fourth through ninth grades.
The author states that the keys to becoming proficient at problem solving is:
- knowing what the problem is asking. In order to do that, the student must understand the vocabulary.
and - knowing how to perform the operation which means the student needs the strategies and steps
The book contains the vocabulary necessary for understanding what the problem is . It provides many clear and easy to read examples and illustrations in each category. You will notice the pages that show step by step how you, for example, multiply decimals.
Some of the chapters are: whole numbers and operations, measurement, algebraic ideas, geometry, decimals, fractions, percents and ratios, and I was very pleased to see many useful tables and charts in the back of the book.
Do you know the differences between mean, median, and mode? If not ,you could receive a good explanation of these concepts on page 100.
Do you understand the terms central angle, chord, radius and circumference? You could check yourself on page 52.
I encourage you to check out this complete math dictionary.
