Book Review - Holding Lies

About the Book

In a town where wild steelhead and uncorrupted waters draw and hold people like a force of gravity, a drift boat emerges stranded below a rapid, empty except for a long smear of blood, and nothing will ever be the same.

In Holding Lies, debut novelist John Larison takes readers deep into a thriving subculture of the Northwest, where a murder mystery rooted in old grudges and new biases forces a community to face the price of their alliances, and recognize the costs of the choices they've made.

Days before fifty-nine-year-old river guide Hank Hazelton hopes to reconnect with his only daughter after a fourteen-year estrangement, haunted by his failures, regrets, and longings, he discovers the empty boat that launches a murder investigation. To Hank, the search appears to be more about old grudges than objective evidence. When Hank himself becomes a suspect, he begins his own investigation - one that will lead him deep into the violent past of his home valley.

Holding Lies is a novel about fathers and daughters, friends and mentors, and sins ancient and repeated. It illuminates our commitments to those who have come before and those who will come after. Steeped in the ecology of a place and peopled with unforgettable characters, Larison's novel brings to life the tapestry of a community sustained by a river, using language so rich and textured that it transports readers to the ferns, first rain, hot springs, and whitewater of the backdrop it evokes.

My Take on the BookDo you love a good mystery? Do you love characters and plot that simmers with anticipation as you read? If you answered yes to these questions, then this book is for you. The author does an amazing job at drawing his readers into the story and into the culture that surrounds the town, the characters and the overall plot of the story.

I was amazed at how intricate the plot was in the story. The way in which the story was written made me want to read more and I found that I did not want to put the story down!

I think that one of the reasons that this was so was that the characters were so well developed and I found that I truly understood where they were coming from and I wanted to see what would happen next and who actually did it... you may be surprised, I know that I was.
