About the Book
Everyone in Emma's family is special. Her ancestors include Revolutionary War spies, brilliant scientists, and famous musicians--every single one of which learned of their extraordinary destiny through a dream.
For Emma, her own dream can't come soon enough. Right before her mother died, Emma promised that she'd do whatever it took to fulfill her destiny, and she doesn't want to let her mother down.
But when Emma's dream finally arrives, it points her toward an impossible task--finding a legendary treasure hidden in her town's cemetery. If Emma fails, she'll let down generations of extraordinary ancestors . . . including her own mother. But how can she find something that's been missing for centuries and might be protected by a mysterious singing ghost?
With her signature blend of lyrical writing, quirky humor, and unforgettable characters, Natalie Lloyd's The Key to Extraordinary cements her status as one of the most original voices writing for children today.
My Take on the Book
First of all I think this is an excellent story. It brings together mystery, family love, good friendship, the importance of family history, perseverance, and deciding what is truly important in life.
Emma's family has a rich history. They were Revolutionary spies, scientists, country music singers and much more. Emma and her brother live with her grandmother in a small town that appears to not prosper. There is a challenge to keep their cafe open but Emma is determined to find a way.
In Emma's family each person in their life has a destiny dream. The dream calls them to their life purpose. Emma reads about each person's destiny dream in the family history book. This is where she finds out about the "treasure". With the help of her two friends she begins a quest to locate the "treasure".
As a reader of this story, you will become involved in the lives, challenges, planning, thinking, searching, and eventually finding the "treasure". The treasure is not what one would expect. It is not gold, silver, money or other riches. It is people and helping them to live. It is an amazing story of her family and the people they saved.
There was one quote in this book I would like to share: . . . .hope doesn't take sadness away . . . but hope reminds you there's something good in spite of the sadness. There's joy still ahead, still yours for the taking.
Encourage your young person to read this wonderful story or read it together.
