In her Leadership Academy, Julie encourages young women to find the leader that exists in all of them, whatever their personality or vocal chord strength might be. Complete with fun exercises and activities, Choose to Matter guides readers in all aspects of their lives. Julie believes every young woman has the power to be a leader who makes a positive impact. And it all starts by choosing to matter. So go ahead, start now. Because you can.
My Take on the Book
Julie has written a book for teens and young women. In this book she spends time and interviews ten women who have been courageous in their lives in some way. They have influenced their families and others with their courage to fight for their health, their family and friends, or what is right in a particular situation. Some of the women interviewed are Robin Roberts, Sophie Healy ( a young Irish scientist), Fahima Noor (an inspirational teen from Afghanistan) , and Amy Liss (living with cerebral palsy).
Julie includes dialogue from their discussions and photos of each woman with herself.
Julie encourages the reader to discover their authentic self. She wants the reader to pursue their dreams and if need be to remove themselves from their comfort zones. Julie helps the reader to evaluate themselves with questions about their leadership style and includes areas within the book to journal.
The theme that seemed to reiterate itself throughout the book and interviews was the power of being positive. The book encourages the reader to live with an attitude of gratitude.
Although this book was written specifically for young women, I think adult women could receive information to ponder and use in their lives.
