Book Review - Louisiana, the Jewel of the Deep South
About the Book
A young reader’s introduction to the Pelican State!
Learn the history of Louisiana with this book by award-winning musician Johnette Downing. Once again, she honors the cultural heritage and traditions of the South through her music and literature. Accompanied by stunningly accurate illustrations, Downing takes you through a tour of the state’s famous symbols. Did you know that the crawfish is the state crustacean? Or that the Catahoula is the state dog? And what is more emblematic of Louisiana than gumbo and sweet beignets? All this and more is revealed in this charming picture book, brimming with rich illustrations. A timeline, which lists when these icons were named, and original song compliment the text and enhance the book’s classroom applications.
My Take on the Book
Johnette Downing has written a nonfiction story for children about Louisiana. The sentence structure is descriptive and concise. The facts about Louisiana are interesting. I learned new facts by reading this book.
Julia Marshall's illustrations accompany the text perfectly. The lifelike drawings of animals, plants, and the people of Louisiana are detailed and will encourage the reader to take the time to take in the entire illustration.
You will enjoy explaining the celebration of Mardi Gras to your child. Maybe you will consider cooking some gumbo or sweet bignets.
Louisiana entered the United States as the 18th state. It has so many special characteristics. It is easy to see why Johnette Downing considers it "the jewel of the deep south".
