About the Book
Olive is not your ordinary girl. And one day when this spunky young lady decides to go for a walk in her grumpy, too-busy city, she finds some extraordinary things. What Olive does with them will delight and inspire. This lively picture book is filled with the author's exuberant collage artwork and playfully hand-lettered words.

About the Author
Kelly Canby was born in London, England, but has lived in Australia since the grand old age of three, which is probably about the same age she started playing with pencils and crayons. And it was probably only a few years after that when she decided that playing with pencils and crayons was something she wanted to do for the rest of her life! This is Kelly's debut children's picture book.

My Take on the Book
The main character is a little girl named Olive. she lives in a city which is noisy with people yelling at each other. As she goes for a walk she encounters a woman in a manhole who is the keeper of lost things. Olive is allowed to take some of the things left behind.

The main part of the story deals with the objects Olive chooses to bring home. You will see how thoughtful Olive becomes with her choices. She takes nothing for herself. Some examples of items she will bring home are: memory for her grandfather, humor for her older sister, eyesight for her dad, and hope for those who live around her.

I absolutely loved the next part of the book. As Olive returns home she gently spills out the contents of the hope jar. As she does this, you see the angry speech bubbles of the neighbors yelling at each other change to compliments, gentle greetings, etc.

This book could easily become a springboard for a family or teacher to discuss with the children about their empty jars. What would you have taken home from the old lady who kept lost things?
