About the Book
In For the Love of Baseball: A Celebration of the Game That Connects Us All (Skyhorse Publishing, May 2014), celebrated nonfiction writer Lee Gutkind and Andrew Blauner have brought together contributors including Roger Angell, Kevin Baker, Frank Deford, George Plimpton, and Stefan Fatsis, and a foreword by Yogi Berra, to revamp this beloved sports anthology. Previously published as Anatomy of Baseball and Great Baseball Stories, this wide-ranging collection now includes pieces by A. Bartlett Giamatti, Gay Talese, Matthew McGough, and George Vecsey.

From the New York Times (“It brims with lyrical reminiscences about the love affair between the city and the sport”) to the Boston Globe (“What this collection best represents is the full spectrum of the baseball experience, from romantic to nostalgic to eclectic”), Gutkind and Blauner’s anthology has been widely praised for its intimate understanding of baseball’s lasting impact on its fans.

From “The Inherent Human Transgression That Is Umpiring: A Slovene Case Study” by Rick Harsch to Frank Deford’s “An Ode to Baseball Caps,” the editors have expertly woven tight, varied, and lyrical interpretations of, as Fatsis puts it, “the gorgeous minutiae of baseball.” Together, the essays accomplish what so many sports testimonials only claim to achieve: “stir our curiosity, memory, and imagination.”

My Take on the Book
This was an amazing collection of short pieces of writing from some of the greats from Baseball's past. I loved to put myself in the myriad of authors' shoes and re-live their baseball experiences. The plethora of diverse writers make this book truly unique and amazingly complete. The book is a quick read and one that any baseball fan will want in their own collection. I have to say that I was completely drawn in from beginning to end and know that if you are a fan, you will be too!
