Book Review - How Did That Get in My Lunchbox?: The Story of Food
About the Book
One of the best parts of a young child’s day is opening a lunchbox and diving in. But how did that delicious food get there? From planting wheat to mixing dough, climbing trees to machine-squeezing fruit, picking cocoa pods to stirring a vat of melted bliss, here is a clear, engaging look at the steps involved in producing some common foods. About the Author
Chris Butterworth is the author of Sea Horse: The Shyest Fish in the Sea, winner of a John Muir prize for natural history writing. The author of many nonfiction books for children, she lives in Cornwall, England.
Lucia Gaggiotti is a graphic designer, packager, and illustrator whose images of food have been used by many food companies in London, including Carluccios and Pizza Express. She lives in London.
My Take on the Book
We want our children to eat healthy foods at each meal. The concept behind this story is WHERE did the food come from. Chris Butterworth takes each possible food choice for a lunch box and explains the journey that food had to get to the grocery store and then into the lunchbox. I found it interesting and perfect for a child to understand.
I can see this leading to making your own bread with your child which will be used in a sandwich. How about making your own cookies to put in the lunchbox or picking apples at an orchard and taking them in your lunch. Lots of possibilities here for enriching your child's knowledge of where their food comes from.
