Book Review - Life Ki-do Parenting

About the Book
As they say, children are sponges, right? Will besides absorbing your wit or other mannerisms, what they can also be taking in is your stress – which can lead to their own problems with anxiety, depression, and even obesity.

Jonathan Hewitt, author of Life Ki-Do Parenting: Tools to Raise Happy, Confident Kids from the Inside Out, has some helpful tips for parents on de-stressing not just the sake of their own sanity, but for the kids as well. Drawing on 25 years of studying and training in meditation, mindfulness and martial arts, Hewitt has developed a concise, simple, and relevant life skill system for parents and kids to achieve a happy, peaceful family unit, and can offer commentary on the following:

  • Wax on, wax off parenting – staying focused and calm while getting things done
  • Simple ways to stay present – keeping your attention on the things that matter
  • Find your "brain drop" system – an effective way for you to drop and organize all of the thoughts in your brain to avoid being scattered
  • Know you're not perfect – accepting that will help you to streamline your energies onto those who matter

My Take on the Book
This book had some great ideas about parenting. The ideas presented were easy to follow and I loved the parenting pillars that were presented at the end of the chapters. When we sign up to be parents we are not always told that it will be challenging, which it is, so having books like this really help in my perspective, as anything that gives me tips to help me with my overall ability to be a great dad is always welcome! There are definitely times when I need to Ninja Breathe, and I know if you have days like I do, you will too. I highly recommend this to all!
