About the Book
This book follows 11-year-old Madison Morgan in her middle school and crime-solving adventures. Unlike other girls her age, Madison doesn’t care too much for crushes, fashion or gossip, but what she does want is a dog of her own.
Between her not fitting in at school and her dad’s refusal to talk about her mother and her death, things are hard enough for the young girl. It doesn’t help that her best friend, Paige, has abandoned her for more fashion-forward friends and that Madison can’t shake the feeling that she’s different from everyone else.
Madison is almost positive things can’t any worse when her father brings home a foster dog, Lillie, who is a scrawny brown terrier afraid of her own shadow. She always wanted a dog, but not one like Lillie. However, when the young girl is forced to work with the odd, new kid at school, Cooper, things start to come together in weird ways. Madison finds out that Cooper knows a mysterious woman named Netta from her mother’s past.
Madison begs her new friend to take her to a rescue dog shelter Netta runs on Highway 17. When Madison and Cooper arrive at the shelter, Madison realizes she may have a closer connection to the canines then she could have ever imagined. The young girl has the ability to understand what the dogs are saying, thinking and feeling. Madison’s newfound ability leads to a dangerous discovery that forces her to choose between doing the right thing for her new canine companions and leaving a new friend without a home.
“Middle school is a time when things begin to change in new and exciting ways. Friendships change, the world seems larger and you often struggle to find your place,” says Torres. “I wanted ‘Madison Morgan’ to show that the best way to get through this crazy, confusing time is through humor.”

My Take on the Book
This author was able to capture the fears, concerns and foibles of an 11-year-old to a tee and convey this so well to her readers. I was very impressed with the style of writing of the author but also the depth of the characters that she presented too. As a reader you feel connected to the characters and you empathize with them and what they are going through. The book also has strong messages about friendship and loyalty that I, as a father, am always looking to have my children hear. The book was a quick read and you too will not want to put this down as you push forward to see what is happening next!
