Book Review - How to Be Popular in the Sixth Grade

About the Book
Camy Baker’s How to Be Popular in the Sixth Grade is a must-read for young girls, who will enjoy Camy’s voice and story, chronicling her experiences at Beverly Hills Elementary, where she attended class with students whose parents ranged from people in the movie industry and plastic surgeons to Saudi Arabian princes. She offers her readers 30 indispensable rules to help them safely navigate their way through the world of adolescence and popularity, told in a fun and engaging manner.

Some of her rules include:

Rule #19 Find a Friend There is a friend for everybody out there, you know that? Even if you are shy; even if you‘re new to the school; even if you feel nobody in this world likes you... you have a friend. Maybe you haven‘t found that friend yet, but she or he is waiting for you.

Rule #23 Don’t Do Drugs This is your brain. Thikhadfkkds is youojerjrkejr braidflaldldlf on druglsls;g;s/ Any questions?

Among many other important pieces of advice, Camy helps her readers to distinguish between a dangerous situation and an adventurous situation, which is crucial to learn as young girls enter the world of peer pressure.

The author’s style is always conversational and accessible, never preachy, admitting in her rule, “You don’t know it all so don’t pretend to,” that she was once known as “Little Miss Know-It-All” and that she has made other mistakes along the way. As a parent, there is no better book to buy your soon-to-be sixth grader who may not want to hear the same advice from you. Camy offers all of her advice as a friend rather than a parent, making her the perfect guide to help your daughter deal with the transition into sixth grade.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that was written at such a fun level for a young child. Not only does this book talk about being popular, but moreover it really is talking about how to become a better person overall. I also would say that most of the ideas in this book would be helpful for many grades and not only 6th grade. This book is really a great book for any tween girl!
