A Very Small Something is a fully illustrated poem about a young girl--Olive Bezzlebee--who is learning to blow her her first bubble. Setting out to solve the mystery of her missing bubbles, Olive finds herself racing trains, listening to the moon sing, and being carried off by the wind. She eventually travels to the edge of her imagination, and learns (with a small amount of help), to do the thing she finds hardest. Olive's bubble carries her home where she discovers she was loved all along.
A Very Small Something appeals to children because of its subject and its playful spirit, and to parents for its treatment of larger issues like failure, rejection, and the difficulty of learning new things. There also is an interactive website for the book (www.averysmallsomething.com), which at the moment features coloring sheets, a video trailer, and a sound recording of the poem (set to music by Jason Noble and read by John Leonard, who is the editor of the Penguin Paradise Lost, but also a very fine actor). They will be uploading crafts and lesson plans for teachers and librarians shortly.
About the Author
David Hickey grew up on Prince Edward Island, in western Labrador, and along the north shore of Quebec. A past recipient of the Milton Acorn Prize and the Ralph Gustafson Prize, his work has appeared in magazines and journals across Canada an the United States. He is an award-winning poet, whose first two volumes have been praised for their affability, candour, and narrative charm. He has been audience-testing his books in schools for years. David is an avid runner and back yard astronomer, and he lives in London, ON.
My Take on the Book
This book uses words and language to convey a beautiful tale that has a lot to do with gum, but larger than that it also deals with issues of failure and rejection as well as challenges that all of us find ourselves having to overcome within our lives. I also love the poetic meter that the author uses as most stories for children these days stay away from this for an easier writing rhythm. This author has put together a wonderful book that both children and parents alike will enjoy and the illustrations within the book are also ones that will just jump off the page! I highly recommend this to all!
