Twenty one amazing Meals On Wheels volunteers from across the country are now competing to become the 2011 American Volunteer. This is the third year of the annual American Volunteer Contest organized by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) and its first time on Facebook. This year, the nominees include a 94-year-old woman who has volunteered for her Meals On Wheels program in New York state for 25 years and a Vietnam War veteran who never misses a day volunteering for his Meals On Wheels program in South Carolina. Those are just a few examples of the Meals On Wheels volunteers who go above and beyond to make sure homebound seniors in their communities have the nutritious food and human contact they need to survive.
The winner of the American Volunteer contest will win MOWAA’s annual Jody Tepedino Nicholo Award and his or her nominating MOW program will be presented a check for $1,000, second place will be presented a check for $750, and third place will be presented with a check for $500 at the 2011 Annual MOWAA Conference in Chicago, Il. Also, one randomly-selected voter will win agift basket from The Pampered Chef® valued at $200.
“This competition pays tribute to the people who are the backbone of Meals On Wheels programs — our volunteers,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden. “They provide a lifeline for our homebound seniors or, as we call them, ‘the hidden hungry.’ The American Volunteer Contest honors everyday citizens who become heroes by helping to make sure no senior goes hungry.”An army of volunteers gives their time and energy to help Meals On Wheels. It is estimated that more than 1.7 million people volunteer for Meals On Wheels, making them the largest group of volunteers in the nation.
Voting for the American Volunteer is now underway and runs until August 26 at 11:59pm (EDT). More than 9,000 people cast their vote for the 2010 American Volunteer. 96-year-old John “High Five” Gill, a long-time volunteer for Meals On Wheels, Inc. of Tarrant County, Texas, won last year’s competition.
MOWAA is able to hold the contest on Facebook this year thanks to Strutta.com, the leading platform for online promotions and an official media partner of the American Volunteer Contest.
