Book Review - The Cave Monster

About the Book

Oh no! L. Joe Bean, Lima Bear's cousin has been captured by the Cave Monster. When Lima Bear and his friends enter the dangerous Black Cave to save L. Joe Bean, the Cave Monster attacks! Will they save L. Joe Bean in time? And will they save themselves? The message of the story is: Friends, individually afraid, find courage acting together. In the series entitled The Lima Bear Stories, each has a distinct personality that shines through in every story. While the children have no idea what twists and turns the story may take, they come to know the characters and have a pretty good idea of how they are likely to act in different situations and settings. Each story carries an important overriding message (such as courage, tolerance, honesty), and we believe that knowing the characters creates a better understanding and appreciation of the message.

My Take on the Book

The Cave Monster is a  delightful story about friendship and how friends through cooperation can help each other in an emergency.

Our friends  in this story are two tiny bears that are not bigger than beans (Lima  Bear and L. Joe Bear), Whistle Toe the rabbit, Back-Back ( an opossum who can make himself invisible), and Maskamal the raccoon.

A Cave Monster takes L. Joe Bean to his cave. The friends decide to rescue him. Each friend brings something with him from home to use in the rescue. Maskamal wants to shoot the Cave Monster and begins to practice using his bow and arrows of various kinds. They do not seem adequate. Lima Bear has a Royal Sword which Maskamal attaches to the end of one of his arrows. This addition to his arrow may just work in the rescue of L. Joe Bean. The friends continue to the cave to find their friend.

Once they arrive at the cave they locate L.Joe Bean. Lima Bear unties him just as the Cave Monster appears. Back Back waves the red flag he has brought which entices the Cave Monster. Maskamal then uses his arrow with the Royal Sword attached and shoots it into the air. When it comes down, it lands on the big toe of the Cave Monster.

The Cave Monster is in so much pain , it begins to jump up and down and the rocks in the cave begin to tumble and crumble on top of him. Eventually the Cave Monster is buried by the rocks and L. Joe Bean is rescued. All the friends are safe.

Everyone is so thankful for Maskamal's great shot that they present him with the Royal Sword. Maskamal becomes known as the best archer in the forest.

The authors extend the use of the story by the activities at the end of the book. Immediately following the end of the story are two sections called "extend the learning' and "activities". I am sure you will find  ways to enhance the discussion you and your child can achieve before, during, and after reading the story.
