DVD Review - Nursery University

About the Movie

In communities across the United States, competition to get into the best schools is starting early. New York City is at the center of this phenomenon, where nursery schools—homes of finger-painting, building blocks, and naptime—have become the arena where parents jostle for the privilege to place their toddlers on a track that some believe paves the way to the Ivy League.

NURSERY UNIVERSITY follows five Manhattan families during the year-long preschool application process, and also gains access into the school admissions departments themselves to reveal the behind-the-scenes antics of this intensely outrageous private school realm. Cue the tears, hysterics and breakdowns—and that’s just the parents! What starts as a race to get their children into the “right” mini-Ivy turns into a reality check when unexpected hiccups arrive that expose both the absurdity of the process and genuine parental anxiety for those wanting the best for their kids. Enjoy the insanity in this sweeter look at the social issues and the little darlings at the center of all the fuss.

My Take on the Movie

This film provides viewers with an intimate look at the crazy journey that many parents have to go through to get their children into the most elite pre-schools. What was amazing to me was that around where I live this is not the case. Even the more expensive options still have room, so in watching this, I could not fathom what some of these parents were going through.

What is somewhat sad though is that you can see that these parents just want the best for their child, but that there are so many other parents that will never be able to offer the same type of opportunities that these parents are trying to offer to their own children.

This movie will open your eyes to what some people would do to get their child into the status and school that they feel their child needs. I believe that all will be fascinated by these five families, and even if you do not find yourself in the same situation of working to get your own child into these elite schools, you will still find the themes that are brought up relevant, and the idea of the have and have-nots in society very prevalent.
