Book Review - Poodles, Noodles and Snickerdoodles

About the Book
Healthy eating and daily exercise has been proven to increase a child’s mobility, strength, resistance to illness and ability to concentrate.  All these attributes will enable your child to compete with her friends at school based on a healthy, well balanced and fair basis.  When a child learns to interact effectively with the peers, teachers and parents, that child automatically develops the skills that are required to prosper in the working world.

Eating well balanced, nutritious meals is the start of teaching children how to take care of their bodies and fuel their energy levels consistently with healthy foods.  Nourishing a child’s body with the right kind of foods provides the minerals and vitamins that promote the neurotransmitters in his brain to work effectively and efficiently.  This will allow a child to improve his concentration in class, increase his ability to absorb information while learning as well as keeping him alert and focused on the tasks at hand.  This is vitally important for any child as the more able he is to learn, the better his chances at success in the future will be.

Incorporating physical activities and exercise in the day to day routine of a child strengthens her muscles, improves bone structure, and burns off excess energy while increasing her coordination.  Children who exercise daily experience a feeling akin to runners high which happens when the body releases feel- good hormones into the brain, creating the feeling of happiness and being alive.  Teaching children to be physically active is vitally important as they develop and grow physically while feeling confident about themselves and their abilities.

A perfect way to start teaching children to eat healthy foods and exercise daily is to read them the new book called “Poodles, Noodles and Snickerdoodles” authored by Kathy L. Raunikar and illustrated by Ingrid M. Raunikar.  The story revolves around two poodles who learn their lesson about healthy eating and exercise the hard way, while their parents guide and instruct them on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

In the book the author explains in a simple and easy way what kinds of foods children should eat and what will happen if children eat unhealthy food.  The illustrations clearly show how the poodles skip and play outdoors so that children can look at the picture and see exactly what the words mean.

Parents and educators can use this book to open a discussion about why it is so important to live a healthy lifestyle and what activities they should do that will help them grow strong and healthy.  Reading “Poodles, Noodles and Snickerdoodles” is a fun way to spend quality time with family while teaching them about eating the right kind of foods and doing the right kind of exercise.

My Take on the Book

With so much information about the obesity in our children today, this story "hits the nail on the head". Our main characters are a poodle family who eat healthy at the beginning of the story. Mom and dad make sure their youngsters eat a healthy diet of fruits , vegetables and whole grains.

However things begin to change when the young poodles begin to eat noodles with butter and cheese and snickerdoodles each day.The poodle pups begin to gain weight and do not want to play outdoors. They lose energy and become unhealthy.

Finally mom and dad poodle put the poodle pups back on a healthy diet of fruits , vegetables , and whole grains. Once again the pups have energy and lose the weight they gained on their unhealthy diet.

This book could initiate a discussion concerning your family's eating habits. Are they healthy? Do your children have the energy they need to play? Are they an appropriate weight? This is a good story to consider enjoying as a family.
