Book Review - The Big Clear

About the Book
THE BIG CLEAR is a novel that teems with indelible characters:

  • Kid Collins, Storm’s lifelong friend and wisecracking weed dealer, who comes along on stakeouts and helps Storm maintain his addled goofball existence.
  • Heather Easley, real estate heiress and Storm’s long-ago crush, who hires him to find her kidnapped nephew amid a flurry of shady Austin expansion plans.
  • Bill Berkshire, a police detective whose surprising connection to the Easley family may bring his motives under suspicion.
  • John Partridge, Storm’s former platoon commander, who’s prepared to blackmail Storm unless he’ll rejoin the military.

As the 10th anniversary of the Iraq invasion approaches, THE BIG CLEAR relives that fateful weekend in 2003 through the eyes of a former soldier who’s anesthetized himself since returning from war, but who just can’t escape his lurking badass within. This novel is “The Big Lebowski” meets “The Bourne Identity,” equal parts funny and action-packed, with a dark heart of trauma. It’s also a literary neo-noir that revels in the traditions of detective fiction while having a fine time subverting them.

My Take on the Book
I did not know what to expect in this book, but once I started reading it I was hooked! I was impressed with the balance of humor and espionage as well as the well developed characters within the story itself. As someone who enjoys a good spy/soldier novel this one lived up to my standards. I found the novel to be a fast read and one that kept me interested from beginning to end. I was impressed with how well the author was able to keep me guessing and wanting to turn the next page to find out what was going to happen next!
