Book Review - The Union Street Bakery

About the Book
When Daisy McCrae’s life crumbles to pieces after losing her job and her boyfriend, she moves back home to help with the family business. Run for generations in Alexandria, Virginia, The Union Street Bakery is in danger of closing if Daisy and her sisters can’t find a way to save it. Ideal for the fans of the Karen White , THE UNION STREET BAKERY (Berkley Trade Paperback; February 5, 2013; 978-0-425-259696; $15.00) by the freshest new voice in fiction, Mary Ellen Taylor, is the perfect blend of family drama, historical mystery, romance and the paranormal.

Adopted as a young child after her mother abandoned her on the bakery’s doorstep, Daisy has always struggled with her identity, and has never fully felt like a real part of the McCrae family. With a less-than-perfect relationship with her two sisters, and her own life in tatters, Daisy starts a journey of self-discovery and beings to learn more about her family, and her own heritage than she ever dreamed.

When lifelong customer Miss Mabel dies in her sleep, and bequeaths Daisy a journal dating back to the 1850’s, written by a slave girl named Susie, everything changes. Just before her death, Miss Mabel claimed she knew Daisy’s mother. With the journal left behind, Daisy has the opportunity to connect with her own family history, while looking into the mystery of the ghost of a slave girl who haunts the bakery to this day.

What she finds are the answers she has longed for her entire life, and a chance to begin again with the courage and desire she thought she lost for good. With recipes included!!) THE UNION STREET BAKERY is surely not to be missed.

My Take on the Book
This was a great book that brings together a story of family and sisters. The story was very well written and I have to say that I was very impressed with the way in which this author shares the world of her characters. On top of this though, I was very impressed with how well the author has developed the relationships within the book. I was also impressed with the story itself as I found myself really getting pulled further and further into the story itself. All-in-all, I was quite impressed with this book, and if you enjoy a story that will completely draw you in and will make you not want to stop, this is the book for you!
