Book Review - Twisted Fairy Tales

About the Book
First it was vampires and werewolves, then it was zombies, now, fairy tales are the hottest new fodder for movies, books, and TV! Hit prime-time shows like Grimm and Once Upon a Time are pulling in viewers by the millions each week. In 2012, Snow White and the Huntsman—a dark re-imagining of the classic tale—premiered at #1 and pulled in more than $56 million its opening weekend.

This trend will certainly continue through 2013 and beyond. At least 15 major live-action films based on fairy tales will be hitting the screen this year, including Jack the Giant Killer and Hansel & Gretel. The message is loud and clear . . . everyone is falling in love with fairy tales!

The Stories We Know and Love Have a Dark Side.

Barron's Twisted Fairy Tales reintroduce readers to the fables of their childhood. But these are not the happily-ever-after accounts you remember. Award-winning fantasy author Maura McHugh revisits Sleeping Beauty and Snow White, as well as lesser known tales like The Bone Whistle and The Seven Ravens, and gives them a macabre makeover. Filled with magic, mystery—and a healthy dose of guts and gore—these gruesome retellings cut a sharp dystopian edge to the stories of:

  • Rapunzel
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • Pinocchio
  • The Cinder Wench (Cinderella)
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • With 20 darkly disturbing tales and brooding illustrations that heighten the dangerous mood, Twisted Fairy Tales will leave younger readers thrilled, chilled?and eager for more.

My Take on the Book
My daughter loves scary stories and she always has. On top of this year's propensity for enjoying fairytales as well. What was interesting about this book was in that the author has done an amazing job. Bringing together fairytales that everyone knows and loves you turns them into chewing stories that will make you wonder about what you've read in the past. The stories are very well written but are definitely not the stories that you have come to know and love in the past. Instead, the author has completely redesigned these fairytales into a much more macabre rendition. Despite no means says that I did not enjoy the stories, as I, like my daughter, also enjoy these type of stories. I found the stories to be fresh and fun to read. Don't get me wrong, the stories were quite dark, but they were also very fresh and new. I also love the fact that there were some new fairytales that I was not aware of from the past that were included in this book. All-in-all this is a great book with great stories within it in the imagery that is held within also holds the imagination and draws you closer into the stories themselves.
