Book Review - The Runaway Garden

About the Book
When faced with chores we hate, we all may contemplate just running away, but Grandpa tells a cautionary tale about the night the vegetables did just that.

“It was a clear and starry night like this,” Grandpa began to say.
That the vegetables in these here parts got up and ran away.
The magic of the moonbeams or the first crisp air of fall
cast a spell on all the plants inside the garden wall.”

The vegetables are sure that a wonderful, exciting world awaits them as they free themselves from their beds but, as such things would go, they return to the garden in the morning vowing never again to roam. Grandpa reminds us all:

“Everyone’s got a place to be and a special job to do, you see.
That includes the vegetables, but also you and me.”

My Take on the Book
Take a grandfather, a granddaughter, and a garden full of vegetables and what do you get? You get a story about the importance of home and feeling important for the role you have in your life.

Our young granddaughter begins to dislike gardening, the vegetables decide they want an adventure outside of the garden, and the grandfather understands the feelings and frustrations of life. It is a story of allowing one to explore and know what else is out there. It is a story of always knowing you can return home to what is familiar.
