Book Review - Midnight on Christmas Eve

About the Book
Santa’s best-kept secret is out.

Kevin R. O’Malley answers the question of how Santa gets around the world in his new children’s book, Midnight on Christmas Eve. In the book, Santa Claus, exhausted from years of trying to beat the clock, petitions Father Time for help that would keep his Christmas Eve trip possible. Santa begins an adventure that could cost him everything – and leave the world without any Christmas magic.

O’Malley was prompted to write the book when his two young children continued to inquire about how Santa could make it around the world in one night. Driven by their curiosity and his own unanswered queries, O’Malley set off to find the answer of how Santa accomplishes his Christmas Eve flight.

“My girls would not accept an answer that was purely conjecture or inexact, so I needed to give them true empirical evidence,” O’Malley says. “My research brought me to the story of Barrister Thurgood Mistletoe, who brought the biggest case of his life to Father Time’s court to fight for Santa Claus. Father Time had an amazing solution and Santa Claus discovered why midnight was truly something special and not just a moment of time on the clock.”

This new legend of Christmas blends historical figures, adventure, education and Christmas magic. O’Malley, who practices law in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, also incorporates aspects of law and procedure into the book.

“I want readers to leave with insight into the treasured tradition of Christmas,” O’Malley says. “The book reveals one of Santa’s greatest secrets and relates Santa’s strongly held sentiments for how important tolerance and forgiveness are to all of mankind.”

My Take on the Book
What a great way to explain the question that all kids have asked over the years, how does Santa do it in one night. I loved how this father brings together his experience as a lawyer to help his own girls cope with their questions. The book was well written and a quick read, and I found that once I started I did not want to stop. My kids were the same way, which is exactly what I want to see, as I want my daughters to love reading and exploring and sharing books with them, like this, is a perfect mix for what I am hoping to have them do daily, which is read for enjoyment!
