Book Review - Voices of the Dust Bowl

About the Book
From 1931 to 1940, a prolonged drought on the Great Plains brought disaster to countless Americans, particularly in the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. This illustrated history for young readers offers a sweeping view of the the catastrophe and its consequences, told through moving first-person accounts of typical participants. Representing people from Kansas to California, from a young couple on a picnic hit by a 'black blizzard' to a child who experiences the rainstorms that end the drought at last, these accounts open a window onto American history. A historical note at the end of the book provides more information about this tragic time, while a glossary expounds on the language of the period.

About the Author and Illustrator
Illustrator Judith Hierstein holds a B.A. in art from the University of Iowa. She has illustrated all of the Gloria Teles Pushker titles released by Pelican. Ms. Hierstein believes that pictures should begin where the written word ends, and she encourages children to share in her love of learning about other cultures through illustrated books.

Sherry Garland, a fifth-generation Texan and the author of more than twenty-five books, writes of history and tells stories about interesting people. Her books have received many honors, including selection for the American Library Association's Notable Children's Books, Best Books for Young Adults, the Reading Rainbow award, the Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List, and the California Young Reader Medal Program. Sherry Garland worked with Ronald Himler on Voices of the Alamo, also published by Pelican.

My Take on the Book
This book is an historical writing of what happened in 1930-1941 in the plains region of the United States. The severe drought and dust storms affected everyone and became known as the Dust Bowl

We are introduced to farmers, bankers, native Americans, ranchers, a nurse, a photographer, laborers, and others who lived through and worked through this challenging period in our nation's history.

You will be inspired by their bravery. You will ask yourself how you would have met the challenges they did.

Every American should read this book, in my opinion.
