Book Review - Robert E. Lee: Character and Valor

About the Book
Rod Gragg here presents Robert E. Lee's character and integrity with consummate skill and profound insight." -Steven E. Woodworth, author of Davis and Lee at War Valor is the strength of mind and spirit that builds bravery in the face of danger. That trait is just one in the aggregate of integrity, humility, and faith that comprise the character of Robert E. Lee. The commander of the Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia, the general was the model of a dedicated, responsible leader. Lee's character is revealed through numerous quotations and insights about him from those who knew him, such as Jefferson Davis, Winfield Scott, Ulysses S. Grant, Stonewall Jackson, and others. A Virginia homeowner who saw the general in person remembered that "even in the fleeting moment of his passing by my gate, I was awed by his incomparable dignity." Lee's life was characterized by one of his most famous statements, written in a letter to his son: "Do your duty in all things. . . . You cannot do more-you should never wish to do less." Photographs of Lee add to the charm of the book, which is a useful reference and an excellent gift.

My Take on the Book
As a person who has always enjoyed history and learning about our country's past, Robert E. Lee has always been a very intriguing character for me to learn about. This book is a great compilation of quotes about this man who always seemed to have a sense of honor and decorum through a turbulent time. I enjoyed reading the quotes and through them I felt that I was able to get behind the man who seemed so enigmatic in the past from everything that I have read about him. Though this is short, it is powerful and for any student of history, you will simply love the book!
