Book Review - Buying America Back

About the Book
There’s a bipartisan movement gathering thunder that just may save America. It’s a simple but brilliant plan that would help end unemployment, increase economic prosperity and lessen the threat from imbalanced trade from such countries as China, India and Vietnam. Americans can take back control by becoming responsible, educated consumers. It’s all based on modernizing the iconic tag that reads: Made in America or Made in China.

BUYING AMERICA BACK: A Real Deal Blueprint for Restoring American Prosperity (SelectBooks; April 9, 2012) by Alan Uke shows how we can create jobs and reclaim our economic prosperity by demanding a better Country of Origin Label in our manufactured goods. Uke is the owner of a manufacturing company who is passionate about keeping his operations and jobs in America, even in the face of the foreign competition and pressure to move jobs offshore to increase profit.

The need for this action is so vital that Uke is leading a grassroots movement to pass a bill through Congress that would mandate better Country of Origin Labeling. Origin labels used to be simple because most goods were produced and sold by domestic companies and bought in person. Today, multiple countries frequently contribute to a single product, often made by foreign manufacturers, and purchased online where the country of origin label is not visible.

By demanding better labeling and disclosure, Americans can choose goods that are made in America or by our balanced trade partners and also avoid supporting countries that don’t conform to environmental, working conditions or human rights standards.

Uke has experience with bringing labeling ideas before. Years ago he had an idea to inspire drivers to choose cars with lower air pollution rates rather than forcing compliance with ride sharing. After dealing with everyone from car manufacturers and the Sierra Club to the EPA, Uke’s Smog Index eventually ended up on all cars sold in the U.S. Today being able to identify cleaner cars is a major selling point in American automobiles.

Uke wants to make significant change possible again – change that will bring an immediate and lasting benefit to all Americans. By BUYING AMERICA BACK we can reclaim our strength as a world leader.

My Take on the Book
This book brings to the forefront of the minds of the reader the importance of buying American and putting money back into the American economy. What was refreshing about this book was the voice that the author used in sharing this book with his readers. As a person who has gone through the ups and downs of the economy first hand, the author was well situated to share what happens when someone does not buy American. It is through this insight that the reader is drawn into an engaging story that you will not want to put down. At the same time, this book will make you think about your own buying patterns and what it means to the overall economy of the United States. A strong book that all should read!
