Tips on Giving Back & Scholarship Opportunity

With Martin Luther King Day around the corner and a new year upon us, it’s the perfect time to share ideas for teaching kids the important lessons of giving back. And who better to offer advice than the parents of young leaders who are committed to giving back? The following tips are from the moms of Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes, who are young people providing extraordinary service to their communities and/or around the world:

  • Walk the walk. Get involved yourself; participate in charitable events on behalf of causes you believe in.
  • Include children in volunteer efforts. Provide opportunities for children to see and act on the needs of others so they learn first-hand how they can make a positive difference.
  • Start small. Do little projects to help others and begin at an early age.
  • Consider a charity allowance. Set aside a percentage of each child’s monthly allowance for charity and let them decide where to donate the money at the end of six months.
  • Support them. Allow their ideas to flourish and help their dreams become reality whether that means lending moral support, providing necessary transportation and equipment, or giving them a pat on the back to keep them going.
  • Remember: Encouraging your children to participate in charitable endeavors is a gift to them, as well as to the people whose lives they touch

The Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes program was created to encourage and empower kids to be leaders and award them for their dedication and accomplishments. From January 12 through February 27, 2012, your readers can nominate their kids, family members, siblings or anyone ages eight to 18 who have made an impact in their communities and beyond by picking up a nomination form at participating Build-A-Bear Workshop stores or by entering online. The 10 selected Huggable Heroes will receive an educational scholarship ($7,500), a donation ($2,500) to the 501 (c)(3) charity of their choice plus a trip to St. Louis to engage in a community service project together and celebrate their accomplishments.
