Book Review - The Black Widow

About the Book
We’ve seen them in movies, cartoons and theme parks. But, what are the back-stories of pirates? How does a pirate decide to become a pirate? Author Phyll T. gives us a glimpse into how good men can turn bad in her new novel, The Black Widow.

In The Black Widow, two different time periods smash into each other while six children are on a camp out. They discover there really are pirates of yesterday in their midst. They find magic golden ostrich eggs and golden feathers that once belonged to "the original seven pirates" who wrote the Pirate Code of Honor. The children discover they are descendants of the original seven pirates and carry with them the values of trust, loyalty and leadership that once were held high among pirates and in the Pirate Code of Honor.

Phyll T. is a three-time breast cancer survivor with a passion for entertaining children. She wants to captivate readers with this story, but also hopes to help children with their creativity. She says kids need to put down the smartphones and go outside and play freely more often without structure.

“Today’s children don’t know how to play without structured activity,” says Phyll. “They are so wrapped up in video games, TV, cell phones, iPods and their computers. They don’t seem to know how to play with their imagination, create games and imaginary things.”

Phyll hopes her story will encourage children and adults to challenge themselves, embrace their fears and develop character.

“People are often afraid to push themselves into the unknown,” Phyll says. “I have my fears, but I look for ways to conquer them through my imagination. Maybe through this book, I can show readers that trust, loyalty, leadership and friendship help us conquer our fears.”

My Take on the Book
For any person that likes a mixture of fantasy and adventure, this is the book for you. Written for younger audiences, this book was still a fun read and one that took no time at all. I truly enjoyed the characters within the book as they were well developed. On top of this though the author did a great job at developing a strong plot that drew the reader in keeping them in suspense as to what would happen next which is the best kind of story. All-in-all I would highly recommend this book to one and all, as it was fun and it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
