My Take on the Movie

This is a story about a young Amish woman who is betrothed to an Amish man with two children.

Katie lives in a typical Amish community with an Amish family. She is dedicated to her way of life except for one part. She has a love of singing "English songs", which is , of course, not permitted. She hides her secret well until a young boy hears her singing and tells her family.

Katie has a past experience with a young Amish man who she loved and he loved to sing also. He leaves and she is devastated. She keeps and hides the guitar they used as they met and sang . Her father finds out about the guitar and smashes it. He thinks she will forget and keep the Amish ways.

At her wedding, she decides she will not marry the Amish man. At this point she is shunned by the Amish community including her family. .This means she is avoided and snubbed. She cannot speak to them, eat with them, or socialize in anyway with them. She is living alone, like an invisible person within the community.
The story continues as she ventures into the "English world" for a day of shopping and being free from her Amish constraints.

An English woman comes to the area and wants to see Katie. Katie's mother visits the woman who we find out is Katie's birth mother. She gave her up at an early age to the Amish couple whose baby died. Katie's birth mother is dying and wants to see Katie. They will not allow it.

As the story comes to an end, Katie leaves the Amish community to find out about her English birth mother. Her parents reconcile with her so at least she knows they loved her still in spite of her decision.

I believe you will find this movie one you will enjoy watching. It certainly delves into the lives of families and communities whether they are Amish or English. It will give you issues to discuss after watching it. I recommend it.
