Book Review - Tractors, Planes, Golf and Dames

About the Book
A testament to the resilience of the human spirit, Don Volk's memoir, Tractors, Planes, Golf and Dames, recounts the life of an ordinary man with an extraordinary ability to transcend the evils of three wars and the painful loss of two loves of his life to fulfill his dreams and find – and risk – true love again.

Volk writes about his long career with the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Air Force; serving as a pilot through three of the most major conflicts of our lifetime: World War II (The Greatest Generation), Korea, and Vietnam; and fulfilling his dream of earning membership in the PGA of America and becoming a life member. Along the way, he organizes countless tournaments and meets some of golf's most colorful characters. But the heart of his story is the openly deep love he had for his wife Petie and of the trauma of her unsuccessful bout with cancer. Unimaginably, he fell in love again with his girlfriend Sandy, only to lose her to the disease as well. With the strength and zeal that characterize his eight decades plus, he fell in love and married again, to a "wonderful, sweet woman," Wandi.

Volk's is a story that will inspire readers, not because of any headline-grabbing feats of glory but rather because of its message of gentle perseverance, and proof that dreams can become reality – time and time again.

My Take on the BookThis book showed a life that was truly lived, and lived well. Filled with humor and situations that will make you say wow, Don Volk does an amazing job at reeling you into the story of his life to get you to see the inspirational side of the journey that he called his own.

What I think I liked best about this story was that it showed me a life worth living and a life that any person would be proud of. One aspect of his life that I admired most was the unconditional love that he shows to his wife throughout their marriage. Being married now for almost 13 years, I can only hope to have the relationship that he has had with his wife when I am his age!

This book is truly inspirational and motivating and is one that I would highly recommend!
