Book Review - A Girl's Guide to Kicking Goals: body image - social media - workouts - recipes
About the Book
As teenage models, Laura Henshaw and Steph Claire Smith know exactly what it feels like to grow up in a media savvy world which makes growing up far more complicated. Having traded in skinniness for feeling great through fitness and a balanced diet, Laura and Steph’s book A Girl’s Guide to Kicking Goals traces their journey towards finding balance, happiness and self-acceptance in a digital world.
In the first chapter, Our Journeys, Steph and Laura narrate their unique journeys, from childhood to high school to their careers. They address pertinent issues such as eating disorders, beauty standards and the influence of social media.
The second chapter, Being Social, examines social media. Laura and Steph stress the importance of making social media a positive space, and avoiding traps that many girls fall into, such as conflating reality and online life and needlessly comparing themselves to others.
Steph and Laura talk about Beating the Bullies in the third chapter, and Your Body Changes, describes the natural changes girls go through at puberty and offers methods of coping with this turbulent time. Steph and Laura also offers pointers on maintaining loving, healthy relationships, both romantically and with family and friends, as well as how to manage time, including setting aside time to relax to reduce stress.
Later chapters discuss how to Find Your Career Path, Exercise, and lastly, You Are What You Eat, which includes healthy yet delicious recipes to go with your new exercise regime that is tailored to you. From Brekkie cups, which are packed with eggs, bacon and goat’s cheese and Legendary lamb salads to Trixy bikkies, Steph and Laura have savory and sweet recipes that are suitable for everyone.
My Take on the Book
This is a book that has a bit of everything for all girls. The book is filled with practical tips that will help your teen to better understand themselves but also the things that they can do to prepare for their futures. As a father of two girls I really appreciated how in-depth the book was but also the amount of great advice that the book offers as well. If you have a teenage daughter this is a book I would highly recommend!

My Take on the Book
This is a great book that brings in quotes from famous and not so famous women that have done something with their life. This book really allows any girl or woman to get inspired from the words and actions of these people. I gave this book to my oldest daughter who has just entered high school. My hope is that it will inspire her to make the most of high school and her life beyond. When I gave this to her I was impressed to see that she started reading it right away. She even started showing the book to some of her friends, which is definitely a sign that it has made an impact. My daughter loves to find quotes that are meaningful to her and she found many in this book. This is the type of book you can give as a gift and it keeps on giving!

Book Review - So Here I Am: Speeches by great women to empower and inspire
About the Book
Discover the inspiring voices that have changed our world, and started a new conversation.
The first dedicated collection of seminal speeches by women from around the world, So Here I Am is about women at the forefront of change—within politics, science, human rights, and media; discussing everything from free love, anti-war, scientific discoveries, race, gender, and women's rights.

Book Review - Bone Talk
About the Book
Samkad lives deep in the Philippine jungle, and has never encountered anyone from outside his own tribe before. He's about to become a man, and while he's desperate to grow up, he's worried that this will take him away from his best friend, Little Luki, who isn't ready for the traditions and ceremonies of being a girl in her tribe. But when a bad omen sends Samkad's life in another direction, he discovers the brother he never knew he had. A brother who tells him of a people called "Americans." A people who are bringing war and destruction right to their home... A coming-of-age story set at the end of the 19th century in a remote village in the Philippines, this is a story about growing up, discovering yourself, and the impact of colonialism on native peoples and their lives.
My Take on the Book
This was an action packed book that really keeps you on the edge of your seat. I found that I loved following along this coming of age story in an environment so foreign to my own experience. The book was one that shows characters that explore what it means to have strong friendship and even how that friendship lasts after their country is invaded. The book is one that you will not want to put down!

Book Review - Rose Coffin
About the Book
A startlingly original magical adventure that gives the phrase "unlikely hero" a whole new meaning.
Rose Coffin can't win. She's teased for her secondhand clothes. She's teased for blushing all the time. And she's teased for slipping into song at inopportune moments, though that's the only thing that keeps her panic at bay.
After a particularly mortifying incident, Rose escapes to the woods where she's captured by a group of otherworldly creatures. They take her to Eppersett-a magical, eerily beautiful place where cemeteries are full of dead dreams, moving castles roll along on tracks, and most shocking of all . . . people seem to love Rose at first sight. They tell her that she's "the one they've been waiting for. The one who's going to save them." An evil force called the Abomination is on the loose, and there's only one thing powerful enough to stop it-her voice.
There's just one catch. Rose hasn't been brought to Eppersett to fight the Abomination.
She's going to be sacrificed to it. She's the chosen one all right . . . the one who's been chosen to die.
In this startlingly original fantasy, M.P. Kozlowsky takes readers on a journey like no other-an adventure that'll transform everything you thought you knew about friendship, love, and the true power of finding your voice.
My Take on the Book
This was such a fun story that brings together magic, fantasy and more while following the growth of Rose as she has to fight for her life but also goes through a fight to find herself. This is definitely a coming of age book, while she is learning about a new world, and fighting to stay alive. This was a book that really moves, and you will be wanting to see what comes next, as I know that I did! This is a book that really flies as you read through it and in the end I was wanting more of these great characters!

"Let the official record show that, I, Nikki Tesla, did not intend to destroy the world."
There are only so many times a kid can invent an instrument of global destruction without getting grounded. So when Nikki's death ray accidentally blows up her bedroom (if you can call a pet ferret with an itchy trigger finger an accident), she's sent to the only place that can handle her. Genius Academy is a school for history's greatest brains. Leo da Vinci? Charlotte Darwin? Bert Einstein? All extraordinary. Yet even among her fellow prodigies, Nikki feels like an outsider thanks to a terrible secret she can't let anyone discover. Ever.
But when her death ray is stolen, Nikki must stop worrying about fitting in and learn to play nice with her new classmates. Because it doesn't take a genius to track a thief around the world, outwit the authorities, and keep a French fry-fanatic ferret happy. It takes all of them.
My Take on the Book
WOW, this was a book that was a thrill ride from beginning to end. You get a mix of action, adventure, suspense, mystery, humor and more in this book. While it was written for tweens, I have to say that even as an adult I found it to be an enjoyable read. The characters were ones that were developed well and they really know their stuff. Book Review - The Politics of Promotion
About the Book
The scenario is all too familiar: a qualified, motivated professional woman does everything she can think of to secure a coveted promotion. After years of investing her time and energy in the company, she is ready to advance. Later, she is shocked and dismayed to find that, not only was she passed over, but the successful candidate had fewer qualifications and little to no familiarity with the practical side of the business. What happened?
The Politics of Promotion focuses on the single most important—and most frequently neglected—ingredient of advancement in the professional world. Many ambitious women were taught that they could succeed on the basis of their qualifications alone. While that would be true in an ideal world, the world we live in falls short. The reality of business is that the people we know are just as important as, if not more important than, the skills we possess. In The Politics of Promotion, the rules of this complex game are revealed so that readers can begin to build the connections they need to get ahead.
PLAYING POLITICS IN THE WORKPLACE IS NOT ABOUT GOSSIP, BACKSTABBING, OR OPPORTUNISM.
Savvy women in business know how to network and with whom. They also understand how decisions are made in their organizations, and they have learned to use these political factors to their advantage. The Politics of Promotion provides clear instructions for women who want to align themselves with important stakeholders and build relationships with influential advocates, so that the next promotion doesn’t slip away.
My Take on the Book
This was a great book that really allows a woman to better understand the politics around them that they need to understand to move forward in their field. As a father of two girls but also a white male I appreciated everything that the author wrote as it allowed me to better understand the reality of what my own daughters may encounter in the future and also what I need to do to support the women around me in my own workplace. The author has created a number of exercises that will allow readers to better understand themselves and the observations and personal reflections make the book something to which all readers will relate. This book will allow women to be more professionally appreciated in the workplace and each page is full of nuggets that you will not want miss.
