Book Review - Humble Leadership: The Power of Relationships, Openness, and Trust

Humble Leadership: The Power of Relationships, Openness, and Trust

About the Book

Bestselling author and father of organizational culture studies, Edgar Schein and Peter Schein trail-blaze with a creative perspective on leadership that encourages vulnerability and empathy as a form of strength.

The Future of Leadership

Leadership is a relationship--but that relationship must change, say legendary organizational scholar Edgar Schein and former Silicon Valley executive Peter Schein. The vertical hierarchy, with its emphasis on formal, transactional relationships, professional distance, and all guidance coming from the top, is hopelessly inflexible and outdated. In a complex world, leadership must rely on high levels of trust and openness throughout the organization, and that can be achieved only by what they call personization and Level 2 relationships, which build the agility to make course corrections quickly. This book shows how such humble leadership has built effective cultures in a whole range of sectors: health care, government, the military, tech and innovation, and more.

My Take on the Book
This is a great book that makes you think about the relationships that you have in the workplace. As a leader you have to understand the relationships and learn to use empathy, trust and collaboration to be able to be a positive leader for the future. This book shares how you need to interact with peers and work collaboratively on the relationships that they have to show trust and respect in all that they do. I loved that the book had case studies that shows how the humble leadership approach works. Through these case studies you get to have a better feel for how you can incorporate the approach in your own workplace.

Walt Disney's name is synonymous with family entertainment. Mickey Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Disneyland, and numerous other creations have inspired generations of children the world over.

The book allow you to better know and understand who Walt Disney was and for me that was one of the best parts of the book. This was a great celebration of a man that I highly respect for all that he created and did in his life!

Book Review - The Homework Strike

The Homework Strike

About the Book
Gregory K. has too much homework.

Middle school is hard work, and Gregory tries to be a good student. He participates in class, he studies for his tests -- he and his friends even help each other with their assignments. But no matter what he does, there's never enough time to finish all his homework. It just isn't fair.

So Gregory goes on a total, complete homework strike. No worksheets, no essays, no projects. His friends think he's crazy. His parents are worried about his grades. And his principal just wants him to stop making trouble. Can Gregory rally his fellow students, make his voice heard, and still pass seventh grade?

Find out in this book for anyone who thinks school is stressful, gets headaches from homework, or just wants to be heard.

My Take on the Book
I think every child has probably thought about doing something to stop all of the homework and this book does just that. The book is a fun, action-packed story that even shares some great messages about homework itself (that are positive in many ways). I also have to say that the main character was great and I loved that he was a poet. It was fun to see how Gregory protests in a "nice" way. The characters were fun, diverse and more. The author even has characters with learning disabilities which was a nice addition tot he book itself. The book is a ton of fun for all ages!

Book Review - Field Tripped

Field Tripped

About the Book
The fifth graders of Liberty Falls Elementary might be the worst fifth graders ever, but they still get to go on a field trip! They're going to visit the Edward Minks Mansion to learn about the eccentric inventor and founder of their town. Legend has it, there are some undiscovered inventions hidden in the house. The students are eager to find them, and they convince Principal Klein to let them out of writing their essay on Minks if they do.

But as Aaron, Eddie, Jessie, and Chloe explore the Minks Mansion, it seems like something strange is going on. Like the adults are missing and someone might be stealing the inventions. But in order to save the inventions and their teachers, the kids might just have to pull some serious pranks to stop the bad guys. Even if it means risking a lifetime of detention.

Can the fifth graders save their field trip and the mansion . . . or will this be the last field trip ever in school history?

My Take on the Book
This was an epic field trip. Talk about a fifth grade class that I would not want to be in charge of. That being said though these students become quite the detectives to try and see if they can stop the bad guys. The book was a fun read and the characters were even better. This is the type of book that keeps you reading from beginning to end and in fact I did not want to stop!
