Every year like clockwork, animals both big and small are driven by a natural instinct to move, in order to survive. On both land and sea, they fight the odds and the forces of nature to breed, feed, or lead and carry on for future generations. This reader is an introduction to the treacherous trek of the zebra, walrus, and Christmas Island red crab to overcome obstacles that include hungry cheetahs, stinging yellow crazy ants, and even their fellow species to make the often impossible journey of their lives.
My Take on the Book
When you open this book and read the table of contents, you will notice this book has information about the migration of zebras, red crabs, and walruses.
I will begin with some basic information.
Animal migrations are often a necessary journey for animals in order to search for food or find a mate. Migrations help the animals to survive on Earth. Often a migration is truly an incredible journey due to the obstacles the animal will encounter.
As you look at each section , you will notice each animal has a page of vital information about the animal and specific vocabulary pertaining to that animal . A map is included which shows where the animal lives. Each section explains the dangers to this animal.
Here are a few examples of the information you will read:
- 30,000 zebras migrate each year in Botswana .The round trip journey is 360 miles. The migration is necessary so the zebras can locate food and water.
- There are 120 million red crabs on Christmas Island. Their migration begins in the forest and ends at the ocean. The crabs' journey is 5 miles long. These crabs migrate because their young can only hatch in the ocean's water. After the female lays her eggs in the ocean, she returns to the forest. When the babies hatch they migrate to the forest.
- Walruses, in the Pacific Ocean, migrate with the movement of the ice. Walruses live in the Bering and Chukchi Seas and Wrangel Island.Walruses migrate to find ice as they are losing their habitat due to the global warming of the Earth.
There is so much information about each animal and the photographs enhance the text. As you complete this book , you will find a list of resources you can use to help these animals to survive.
