2 New Great Books for Movie Lovers


About the Books
This is the first major book-length study of the work of Australian film-maker Baz Luhrmann, one of the most exciting and controversial personalities working in World Cinema today. Luhrmann's reputation as an innovator rests on the evidence of the three films known as the Red Curtain Trilogy: Strictly Ballroom (1992), William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge! (2001), which together demonstrate the development of a highly distinctive style and brand.
 
Pam Cook, who was given unprecedented access to the Luhrmann private archives, explores the genesis of the Red Curtain aesthetic, from Luhrmann's early experience in theatre and opera to his collaborative working methods and unique production set-up. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Luhrmann and his chief collaborator, designer Catherine Martin, she traces the roots of their work in an increasingly globalised Australian film culture, investigating the relationship of their company Bazmark to the Hollywood studio Twentieth Century-Fox, and the influences on their style and production methods. At the book's heart are substantial analyses of the spectacular Red Curtain films and the historical epic Australia (2008). This lively and original study of one of contemporary cinema's most fascinating figures will appeal to film scholars, cultural historians and Luhrmann enthusiasts alike. 


PAM COOK is Professor Emerita in Film at the University of Southampton. She is the editor of The Cinema Book Third Edition (2007) and Gainsborough Pictures (1997), and the author of Fashioning the Nation: Costume and Identity in British Cinema (1996), I Know Where I'm Going! (2002) and Screening the Past: Memory and Nostalgia in Cinema (2005).

One of the most daring films of the 1950s, the dark satire Sweet Smell of Success, took on McCarthyism at a time when film studios were cringing under the repressive eye of the censors and an equally intimidating political and media environment. Starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, this film was the first of its kind to take on the Hollywood system as it served up a dose of revenge for the left against the suffocating cultural atmosphere of the period.


James Naremore is the author of a number of books, including Acting in the Cinema, The Films of Vincente Minnelli, More than Night: Film Noir in Its Contexts, and On Kubrick. He is Emeritus Chancellors' Professor at Indiana University.

My Take on the Books
I am a movie lover. You will find ,me borrowing movies from our local library or sometimes going to the movie theater itself. I am a lover of good plot and especially good character development, I learned much of this love from my training as an actor back in College.

I have been impressed with Baz Luhrmann for some time. He has been pushing the gauntlet on a what it means to be a good movie director for some time, and through movies such as
Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge the viewer is transported into the film becoming a part of the story themselves. The new book that Pam Cook presents provides the reader a great glimpse into the mind and man who is Baz Luhrmann. I found her insights to be fascinating and you could tell that she spent many hours investigating and going through interviews that she had with Luhrmann to make the book as pristine as it is.


The second book, a Film Classic book on The Sweet Smell of Success provides the reader with a great insight into the great Hecht-Hill Lancaster movie. It brings the reader step by step through the movie, examining some of the darker themes as well as some of the tenser moments with critics and sensors that it had to push through. This book will give you a much better appreciation for the movie!
