Book Review - Maya's Treasure

Maya's Treasure

About the Book
Keeping close the words and memories of her grandmother, a young girl is determined to craft a treasure from cast-off bits of shell in this beautiful picture book.

  • Each morning when the sun rises, Maya and her sister, Alita, go to the shore to collect the beautiful seashells the waves wash up on the beach overnight.
  • The sisters scrub their finds until they sparkle like stars, then string them together to make beautiful jewelry they can sell to the people in their island village.
  • When Alita discards shells she deems too broken or ugly, Maya rescues them and remembers the words of her grandmother: ''Even the tiniest nub can be quite beautiful. You just have to find the magic in it.''
  • But can Maya turn the cast-off shells into something truly special?
  • Vibrant full-color pastel illustrations throughout evoke magic and memory.
  • By the illustrator of ''Ravita and the Land of Unknown Shadows'' and the author/illustrator of ''Misadventures of a Magician's Son.''
  • Picture book measures 8-3/4'' wide x 11-1/4'' high.

My Take on the Book
This is a beautiful book that has a wonderful message. The images throughout the book jump off the page and draw you into the story, but even more enticing are the words and the message that is shared throughout the book. I loved the fact that the author shares a message that there is beauty all around you and that even throughout someone may think of something of having value, that everything has value. This is a powerful book that not only is enjoyable as a story, but it also educated and helps the reader to learn more about themselves and the world around them. A must read!

Book Review - Melville

Melville

About the Book

Meet Melville, a purple, softly round, beyond-adorable sea creature who is off to “find a place for just me.”

Leaving his warm and loving mama behind, Melville the sea creature sets off for an adventure, and he knows just the kind of place he’s looking for. Along the way, he gets lost (briefly), encounters sharks and other big sea creatures, and floats past a pirate ship. Melville checks out a few spots, but all fall short of his dream place…until, weary from his adventures, he finds his way back to his mama—a place that is “just right.”

My Take on the Book
This is a cute story made for early or pre-readers. The book is written in a cadence that you can really draw the eye of the reader into the story. You can ask questions of the reader or simply have the young child just enjoy the pictures and the story itself. It is a cute story that shares the love of a parent, but also the thrill of adventure and seeking outa place that is their own. It is a lovely story that young readers will definitely love!

My Take on the Blu-ray
I was a fan of Kate Kane in season one but in season two I am even more drawn in by the acting, the characters and more. Each episode, while dark, as any Bat story tends to be, you will see a glimmer that brings you back each week. The episodes are action-packed, you get drama, mystique and more. I have enjoyed seeing Javicia Leslie embodying the Batwoman role and seeing her develop into the role. No person taking on the cowl will be able to fill a past Batperson's shoes right away. This is why they have a great team which we see in this series. You also see the humanity that this season's Batwoman has and that she is not fallible which makes her relatable. All-in0all, this was a great season and I am looking forward to season three!

My Take on the Book
If you are a Teen Titan/DC comics fan or you love a great graphic novel with amazing images and a solid plot, this is the book for you. As someone that is a Teen Titan fan you really are drawn into the story of Raven and Beast Boy. You get to see their romance while you also get to see some of the light hearted nature that they have together, even though inside they are still struggling with inner-demons. The artwork throughout the book is amazing and the book itself is written in a way that you are transported into the action, drama and more, and it compels you to not put the book down as you want to know what happens next. This is a great story of love, friendship, acceptance and more.

Book Review - Judy Moody: In a Monday Mood

Judy Moody: In a Monday Mood

About the Book

For anyone who has ever had the Sunday night blues, Judy declares that every day can be a holiday if you just find something to celebrate. Happy National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, anyone?

Crumbs! Why can’t every day be Saturday?

Judy Moody is Monday-morning mopey. Another week in her same-old seat at her same-old desk in her same-old school. Even worse, there aren’t any days off from school for ages. But when she steps into Class 3T, Judy’s Monday frown turns upside down. Pop! Pop! Pop-pop-pop! Mr. Todd is making Monday special by celebrating Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (no lie)! This gives Judy an idea that just-might-maybe turn her week around: why not make every day of the week a holiday? But after she and her friends come up with a week’s worth of wacky celebrations, from feeding ninja squirrels to honoring National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day, will the weekend be one big letdown?

My Take on the Book
Another great Judy Moody book that not only brings you back into the world of Judy Moody, but also allows your reader to explore deeper issues of culture, different holidays, friendships and more. This was a great book that will help your child to see the world around them in a new way, while keeping it entertaining and fun. By the end of reading this, my daughter continues to tell me she is looking forward to reading the next book, which is always the sign of a great book and a great series!

Book Review - Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story

Unearthed: A Jessica Cruz Story

About the Book

Acclaimed author Lilliam Rivera and artist Steph C. reimagine one of DC's greatest Green Lanterns, Jessica Cruz, to tell a story about immigration, family, and overcoming fear to inspire hope.

Jessica Cruz has done everything right. She's a dedicated student, popular among her classmates, and has a loving family that has done everything they can to give her a better life in the United States. While Jessica is a part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, allowing her to go to school and live in the U.S., her parents are undocumented. Jessica usually worries for her parents, but her fears and anxiety escalate as a mayoral candidate with a strong anti-immigration stance runs for office.

As the xenophobia in Coast City increases, Jessica begins to debate whether it's worth renewing her status to stay in the U.S., or if her family would be safer and better off moving back to Mexico. And despite her attempts to lean on her friends and family, she finds herself constantly visited by visions of Aztec gods, one pulling her towards hope and the other towards anger.

But when her father is detained by I.C.E., Jessica finds herself being pulled into an abyss of fear. With her father gone and feeling helpless, Jessica must find her way out of her fears and ultimately become a voice for her community.

My Take on the Book
This graphic novel has such a different style from other books that DC has presented in the past. It is a nice change and the story is fresh and unique. The story itself is action packed and engaging and leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat as you wait to see what comes next. The character in this book is someone that you can relate to and while I did not have a lot of context for this character, outside of knowing it came from Green Lantern mythology, I still was drawn in and completely entranced by the visual elements and the writing as well. The weaving in of concepts of racism, ICE and more make the story relevant and makes you want to read even deeper into the pages to see what will happen next. I was really impressed by the whole story and I think you will be as well!

My Take on the Book
For the young reader this is a great book that will encourage them to read along, or follow along as a parent reads the book with them. The images and recognizable characters are ones that my niece loved and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book to her. As a six year old, she got lost in the worlds that were presented on the page, but I also love watching her eyes get huge as she was looking at all of the beautiful images and we had side conversations about the characters too. The book was beautifully created and my niece, for one had a true blast asking me to read the book over and over again and I do not see that changing anytime soon!

Book Review - Lost Legends: The Rise of Flynn Rider

Lost Legends: The Rise of Flynn Rider

About the Book

The first book in a new middle grade series that features the adventures of Disney’s most loveable roguish heroes as kids!

Before he was a legendary thief, he was just a boy named Eugene..."hi, how ya doin'?"

Twelve- year-old Eugene Fitzherbert needs a plan. He loves Miss Calre and the boys at the orphanage, but he's not a little kid anymore. He can't spend his days getting into mischief and acting out his favorite passages from the Flynnigan Rider novels. In his imagination, he is that daring rogue Flynn Rider, and his best friend, Arnie, is famous thief Lance Strongbow, who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Even though Eugene knows it's just a fun game, he can't help but wish there was more for him out there. Travel. Riches. And maybe, just maybe, his parents.

So when a traveling circus comes to the kingdom promising a life of excitment, brotherhood, and unimaginable treasure, Eugene and Arnie see it as the start of their great adventure. But it soon becomes clear that there’s more to this ragtag crew than meets the eye, and it'll take new heroes―namely, Flynn Rider and Lance Strongbow―to save the day.

Filled with daring adventure and rollicking fun, the Lost Legends series explores the untold origins of Disney’s most infamous rogue boys.

My Take on the Book
This book really gives you an inside look into Flynn Rider, especially into his early life and what turned him into the person that Disney fans have come to love. It is a fun book with great characters that are new to the scene, and you really get drawn into the world of Flynn Rider from page one to the very end. The author does a great job developing the characters within the book and the plot moves swiftly, keeping you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. I found the book to be a very fun read and in the end you really do get to know Flynn on a much more intimate level, making him even more of a character that you will love!

Book Review - Liar, Liar, Head on Fire

Liar, Liar, Head on Fire

About the Book
On the outside, twelve-year-old Hector seems like he’s got it all. He’s strong, fast, and rumored to be the favorite to win this year’s Zeus Cup at the Mt. Olympus Spartan Race, the highest honor in his small Midwestern town. Hector’s parents and his five siblings trained to win gold in their twelfth year, but all fell short. Now Hector is their last chance to bring glory to the family, and he’s starting to feel the pressure. After a mysterious (and extremely talented) girl named Mae obliterates him at the practice run, Hector is desperate to do whatever it takes to win and make his family proud. Cue a certain god of the Underworld who has a mighty proposition for Hector: Hades will give him godlike strength and speed in exchange for the trophy at the end of the race. Seems like a pretty good trade-off. But as Hector soon discovers, no deal with Hades is as straightforward as it seems, and he’s going to have to go the distance or risk going from hero to zero.

My Take on the Book
My family are huge Disney fans and whether the story is similar or completely different from stories that they know they tend to love them, and this book did not disappoint them in the least. One of the things my daughters loved about this book, but also in the series of books was the American Chiller vibe that you have as you read them. It is written to chill you but also entertain you throughout and it does not disappoint. There is even humor spattered through the book too. You get to meet new characters that have unique interests that you can relate to and you get to reconnect with Hades and his minions which is always fun. All-in-all this is a great book for all that love chills and Disney thrills!

Book Review - What Once Was Mine: A Twisted Tale

What Once Was Mine: A Twisted Tale

About the Book

Desperate to save the life of their queen and her unborn child, the good citizens of the kingdom comb the land for the all-healing Sundrop flower to cure her . . . but someone mistakenly picks the blossom of the Moondrop instead. This shimmering flower heals the queen and she delivers a healthy baby girl―with hair as silver and gray as the moon. But with her mysterious hair comes dangerous magical powers: the power to hurt, not heal. For the safety of the kingdom, Rapunzel is locked away in a tower and put under the care of the powerful goodwife, Mother Gothel.

For eighteen years Rapunzel stays imprisoned in her tower, knowing she must protect everyone from her magical hair. When she finally decides to leave the only home she's ever known―to see the floating lights that appear on her birthday―she gets caught up in an unexpected adventure with two thieves: a would-be outlaw named Gina, and Flynn Rider, a rogue on the run. Before she can reach her happy ending, Rapunzel learns that there is far more to her story, and her magical hair, and her future than she ever knew.

My Take on the Book
My family loves twisted tales and they loved Tangled so this book was the perfect read for our family. The author does an amazing job at building out the characters and allowing you to experience the action in a unique way with every page. The character development was solid and I felt that I really got to know the characters in a way I never did from just watching the movie. Don't expect this book to be a retelling of all you know from the movie either as the author does a good job at building out a new storyline that does twist the original story in a new way and for me it was a ton of fun to not only read but immerse yourself in from page one to the very end.

Book Review - Cranky Chicken

Cranky Chicken

About the Book

Narwhal and Jelly meet The Bad Guys in this heartwarming, brightly illustrated, and downright hilarious chapter book about what happens when a very cranky chicken is befriended by a very cheerful worm.

Cranky Chicken is, well, cranky. With one cranky eyebrow, cranky eyes, and even cranky, scratchy feet. Young readers will love seeing the mismatched friendship grow over the course of three charming and laugh-out-loud short adventures as Chicken and Speedy become BFFs (Best Feathered Friends) and Speedy shows Chicken how to look on the bright side.

My Take on the Book
This is such a fun book that introduces you to cranky chicken, a chicken that does seem to be in a bad mood. However, as the story goes on you will find that the chicken is not as cranky by the end with a little help from a friend. This was a very cute story with fun characters and a positive message too. Book Review - Evil Thing: A Villains Graphic Novel

Evil Thing: A Villains Graphic Novel

About the Book

“Sure, you know the story of those wretched Dalmatians. But don’t I deserve a chance to tell my own side of the story? It is fabulous, after all.

”You may think you know the tale: a happy young couple, one hundred and one Dalmatians, and the woman determined to turn them into a perfectly spotted fur coat.

But who is that monster, that scene-stealer, that evil thing? Who is the woman behind it all? Before the car crash, before the dognapping, before furs became her only true love, there was another story. This is the story of Cruella De Vil—in her own words.

Even the cruelest villains have best friends, true loves, and daring dreams. After all, nothing is as simple as black and white.

In this first graphic novel adaptation of the New York Times best-selling Villains series, Arielle Jovellanos brings Serena Valentino’s darkly captivating world to life with beautiful and haunting illustrations in a stunning new visual format.

My Take on the Book
This is a great way to explore the origin story for Cruella. As someone that loves Graphic Novels, this one really captures the characters but also the story and you get to see that there is a lot more behind the story that makes Cruella the evil person that she becomes. The story is great and the artwork really stands out on the page. If you love Disney and love origin stories, this is one that you will not want to miss!
