MEDIA SAVVY MOMS FORM ‘THE MOTHER COMPANY’ IN EFFORT TO REDEFINE SCREEN TIME

A group of mothers led by former ABC executive, Abbie Schiller, and director/producer, Samantha Kurtzman-Counter, are proud to announce the launch of their new children’s multi-media company, The Mother Company. The independently funded company was born out of concern with the content, quantity, and pacing of media that children are exposed to at a young age. In addition to helping children navigate social and emotional issues, The Mother Company aims to help parents find the tools and discussions that might alleviate some of the stress of everyday parenting. The Los Angeles based company will produce a series of multimedia educational products for preschool children ages three-to-six, including a series of DVD’s, iPhone Apps and books focused on social and emotional learning. The Mother Company launches next week at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas.

“As a working mom of a three-year-old, I was desperate to find a media product for my child with a calm pace and sense of visual style that would help me teach her all the important character-building lessons that many parents struggle with, such as ‘sharing’ and ‘how to be a good friend’,” says Abbie Schiller, President and Founder of The Mother Company. “With all of the overwhelming support we’ve received from moms all over the country, we clearly aren’t the only parents in need of the products we’re creating through The Mother Company.”

The first live-action hosted 45-minute DVD released by The Mother Company is “Ruby’s Studio: The Feelings Show.” The first episode in the “Ruby’s Studio” series, “The Feelings Show” aims to help three-to-six year old children learn to identify, articulate and move through their feelings. Host Ruby (Kelsey Collins) welcomes children into her stylish art studio, where children learn all about their feelings, like how to cope when they are left with a babysitter, how to deal with frustration, and how to calm themselves when they’re mad, though a series of animated segments, original songs, interviews with real kids and hands-on activities they can do at home. The DVD is currently available for purchase on Amazon.com for $19.99. Eco-friendly plush dolls of two of the characters from “The Feelings Show,” Sid Snail and Lucy Ladybug, are available for $26.99 on The Mother Company’s website.

The Mother Company’s website (www.themotherco.com) features expert articles from parenting guru Betsy Brown Braun (Just Tell Me What to Say), media literacy expert Dr. Faith Rogow, and early childhood educator/author, Mary Hartzell M.Ed (Parenting From The Inside Out.) Brown Braun also wrote the "Pop-Up Parenting" optional feature for the first DVD, which offers parents poignant tidbits of advice while their children enjoy the show. The Mother Company website will host posts from regular moms and behind-the-scenes footage of the company’s launch. They also encourage other moms to participate in polls, comments and ideas for products and shows.
