Book Review - Great Migrations: Butterflies

About the Book
The monarch butterfly, one of the most seemingly delicate of all of nature's animals, proves to be one of the toughest in this reader. Making the yearly trip from the Northern United States and Canada to the Oyamel forest of Mexico is no easy task, and it takes five generations of butterflies in order to do so. Battling cold temperatures and the threat of starvation, these beautiful insects complete an almost 3,000 mile journey over the course of two months, only to have to turn and around and head back home.

My Take on the Book
Is there anyone who does not enjoy watching butterflies? They perform their ballerina dances from plant to plant and definitely make our world a more beautiful place. These delicate creatures withstand many dangers in nature from animals , to weather, and even humans.
The Monarch Butterfly makes a long journey each year and this book, filled with detailed photographs and easy to read and understand text, will be one you and your child will enjoy.

Let me tell you a little about this butterfly's migration.

The Monarch Butterfly flies 2000 to 3000 miles each year from the United States and Canada to the forests of Mexico .

They winter in Mexico and when spring arrives they make the return flight. They travel totally by instinct.

A single butterfly cannot make the journey to Mexico. In fact it takes several generations of butterflies to fly that distance. The author uses a map to indicate the journey of each generation.

Laura Marsh used photographs to show the various dangers that the Monarch Butterfly will encounter. She illustrates the life cycle through photographs. The metamorphosis of this small insect will astound your child. I know it is still a wonder to me.

Ms. Marsh includes suggestions for you to use to help the Monarch Butterflies in your area. Why not plant a butterfly garden next spring? You will be rewarded by the lovely sight of the butterflies.
