Book Review - Great Migrations: Whales

About the Book Over the course of their 70-year lifespan, sperm whales will easily travel the circumference of the Earth in search of food and the need to breed and find a mate. Males will travel as far north as the Bering Sea and as far south as Antarctica in order to find enough food to sustain their ways of live—up to 700 squid a day! Along the way, these massive beasts battle 30-feet-long giant squids, and each other, to sustain their ways of life.

My Take on the Book
Whales have fascinated humans for years. These huge mammals have compelled us to take whale watching ships to try to get close to them, use scuba gear to photograph them under the oceans, audio tape the whale's sounds, and assist them when their numbers grow so small that they can disappear from the face of the Earth forever.

Laura Marsh concentrates on one specific whale in this beautifully illustrated book. That whale is the Sperm Whale.

I would like to share some of the information in this book with you.

Sperm Whales have the largest brain of any animal in our world. They are the largest toothed predator. The males can weigh 50 tons and grow to be 60 feet in length.

Whales travel in pods and are lead by an older female. She leads the pod to the best feeding grounds. These whales eat octopus, skate and fish. Traveling in pods allows the whales to protect each other, especially the calves or babies. Ms. Marsh included a map in the book to show the migration route . The whales migrate around the world according to the season.

As you read , you will find a wealth of information about Sperm Whales: how they talk to each other, the enemies of these whales, and how they have become endangered.

Finally, Laura Marsh included at the end of the book resources which you can use to assist these amazing creatures in their struggle to survive.

Once you share this book with your child, I am sure you will seek out other books on whales. Enjoy!
