Book Review - Counting Chickens

About the Book
Don't count your chickens ... but do count your eggs, fish, and elephants! Distinctive Flensted Mobiles are featured in this innovative counting book. Young readers can count from one to ten and back again, by twos or threes, and can even find solutions to simple word problems. Arithmetic has never been so much fun or so colorful! Embossed images make for a multisensory, tactile experience.

My Take on the Book

This book is a wonderful array of color and counting and my youngest daughter just loved it. As a counting book, I loved the mixture of both colors and counting. Each page within the book jumps off the page with color and fun images and objects that young eyes just gravitate to.We are using the book to count by ones, twos and threes, though Diva-PJ can only comprehend so much at this point.

Let's take a look at a few pages so you can see how this book can be a math teaching tool in your home.

One page shows three different chickens and their eggs. They are hanging on different mobiles. The text asks the reader how many eggs are with each colored chicken. Then it asks if there are enough eggs to make a dozen, so the vocabulary of "a dozen" is introduced.

Another page uses color recognition and counting. This page has mobiles of different colored elephants. The first question is

"How many blue elephants?". Then "How many yellow elephants?" Then "How many elephants in all?" ( when counting all the elephants the reader must be careful not to count the whale that is on the page too)

There are several pages where the concepts of adding and subtracting are introduced with the numerals and the shapes that correspond to the numbers.

New math vocabulary is introduced throughout the book to enhance the math concepts of counting, addition and subtraction.

I feel this book will be a positive experience for a preschool child and one just entering kindergarten. It is one that will keep the parent and the child actively interacting . Enjoy this book with your young mathematician!
