Book Review - Outsiders on the Inside

About the Book Taking long vacations.
Not being able to work late hours.
Leaving the office early to take care of a sick child.

These are the most common (and justified) problems of a parent in the workplace. Having kids is one of the greatest joys in the world, but when it comes to the office, parents often believe that the phrase 'I have a kid' means everyone should sympathize with their situation. What many parents fail to realize is that unless you have children, you don't truly understand the issues of bringing up kids, and vice versa.

Career coach and award-winning author David Couper knows what it feels like to be a working dad in an office full of singles. In his latest book, "OUTSIDERS ON THE INSIDE: Creating a Winning Career Even When You Don't Fit In" (Career Press)  Couper addresses how to handle being an outsider in all different situations, including being a parent.

Couper believes that parents and singles need to cooperate in the office so all obligations are given the same weight. As Couper explains, "Your single work buddy can help you out when you have a kid issue, but remember that he too, has a life outside the office. Perhaps he has a sick relative, volunteer work, or even a budding relationship. Offer to stay late for him once and awhile." Personal events should be treated fairly and equally. The office dynamic will be better for it.

"OUTSIDERS ON THE INSIDE: Creating a Winning Career Even When You Don't Fit In" is Couper's eighth book.  He is an award-winning career trainer and coach in the U.S., Europe and Asia.  He is also a parenting 'expert', as he is the proud father of four-year old Teddy.

My Take on the Book
What I liked about this book is that it specifically shows that there is a place for everyone in the workplace, even if it isn't where that are currently working. Full of real life examples, this book helps anyone who is the traditional person that does not fit in to understand that it may just be the company that they are working for, not just them.

The book is not about conforming to the environment that you are in, but instead it is about using your uniqueness towards something great. As mentioned, the book uses great examples of people who just did not fit in and they ended up making it big. One example was:

-Ben and Jerry, the ice cream guys, were Jewish college drop outs and failures. They made a point of being green when it wasn't all that popular.

Overall, if you feel that you just do not fit in, this book may be the perfect book for you. Check it out today!
