My Take on the Book
Grab your scuba gear and join the world of Sylvia A. Earle in the oceans of the world. You will learn amazing facts about all kinds of sea animals , a trench in the sea, mountains on the ocean floor, and more. Beautiful photographs, taken by Sylvia, enhance the text. The text is written in easy to read and understand language so all ages would enjoy this book.

Sylvia A. Earle helps the reader to see the importance of our oceans and everything that lives in the ocean. In the back of the book she lists twenty ways that humans can help to protect our oceans. These are common sense actions that you could easily begin to put into motion with your family today. I challenge you to select at least a few and then continue to add one or more until you have completed the list. Here is one example from the book: Be a water monitor.Report leaks and drips at home and at school.

I would like to give you a sample of the book's contents: Whales have caught our imagination and fascination for hundreds of years.Sylvia has photographs of various whales and a few facts about each whale. She included a photograph of krill which is the main food for many whales. Did you know that a jellyfish is not a fish? It is basically a drifting animal that cannot control where it goes. Another interesting fact was about the electric eel. This eel has two electric organs in its body that can send up to 200 volts of electricity. This is enough current to power a hairdryer.

Sylvia introduced us to some strange looking creatures. Are you familiar with the blobfish, barrelye fish, or the hatchet fish?

Did you know there is a mountain range in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that extends for 6,214 miles?

I feel you and your child will find this informational book one you will read often.

Enjoy!
