Book Review - The Profiler

About the Book
Contrary to the assumption that Joran van der Sloot is a serial killer, Pat Brown wholeheartedly believes he fits the profile of a serial rapist who, when rejected by his victim, becomes enraged and kills.  She discusses on this on The Today Show, in an in-depth article written for Women in Crime Ink and in two interviews with David Lohr of AolNews.com.  Brown emphasizes that van der Sloot is behaving in exactly the manner she would have expected of a serial rapist and “has been circling the globe for years now, enjoying sexual adventures without any penalty.”  Already the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, ironically five years to the day he brutally murdered Stephanie Flores Ramirez, Brown believes van der Sloot enjoys “the power he has to enthrall people with his tale and manipulating them into believing what he says is true, especially because it isn’t the truth.”
Brown’s latest book, The Profiler: My Life Hunting Serial Killers and Psychopaths (Hyperion Voice Publishing), written with Bob Andelman, shows that life as a criminal profiler is anything but glamorous as it’s often portrayed in the movies and on television.  Pat Brown doesn’t spend days in the lab and then hunt down killers in her stiletto heels; instead, she takes readers through the step-by-step process with her, giving a better understanding of deductive criminal profiling and how this scientific analysis that is based on physical and behavioral evidence, can be one of the most beneficial tools available to law enforcement officers today. One of the top criminal profiler’s in the nation, Brown has provided crime commentary, profiling and forensic analysis in over one thousand TV and radio appearances worldwide.  She has been a frequent guest on Nancy Grace and Jane Velez-Mitchell, as well as making several appearances on the Today Show and CBS, where she offers her expertise to show what makes Joran van der Sloot tick, and why he does what he does - another reason why Brown’s book reads like fiction but is based entirely on actual events and takes readers inside the minds of cold-blooded killers like van der Sloot.  For more information on these and other shows she has appeared on, please view the websites below.

My Take on the Book
There are so many television shows on today about crime, profiling, and the like, but to read something from someone who truly knows her stuff, really opened my eyes to what profiling was all about.

Prior to reading this book, I had not read anything from the author before, nor did I know anything of her celebrity status as a profiler.

I found the cases that the author presented to be interesting. She does a good job at leading her reader along and allowing the reader to learn what they need to be looking for when searching for a criminal. I found the intricate information that she shared to be intriguing, as I would never have guessed there was as much detail into the profession and art of what she does as a profiler.
